Box Score NORTHFIELD, Vt.—Bridgewater State University took the title of the 2013 Ed Hockenbury Classic following an 86-58 win against Norwich University. Bates College finished third following their 104-83 win against the University of Maine-Augusta.
UMA's Arreonte Lee (San Antonio, Texas), Bates' Meredith Kelly (Cohasset, Mass.), Norwich's Aliah Curry (Windsor, Mass.) and Bridgewater State's Colleen Hanscom (Melrose, Mass.) were named to the All-Tournament Team, while Megan Boutilette (Charlton, Mass.) of Bridgewater State was named the Tournament Most Valuable Player.
Bridgewater State 86, Norwich 58
Four different members of the Bridgewater State squad scored in double-figures en route to Saturday's 86-58 win against Norwich University in the championship game of the 2013 Ed Hockenbury Classic. With the win, the Bears of BSU improve to 5-2 on the season, while the loss drops the Cadets to 4-4.
Norwich would score first on a layup by Curry, but the Bears took the lead on a the next trip down as Elisha Homich (Ludlow, Mass.) connected on her first three-point basket of the day. The Bears would take their lead to eight points before Norwich spearheaded a counterattack that saw the Cadets trail by just two points, 22-20, with 9:26 to play in the half.
The Cadets were unable to even the score on their next trip down, which allowed the Bears to open the lead back to five on Homich's second three-pointer at the 8:11 mark. The Bears would control the score in the remaining time, outscoring Norwich 25-9 in the stretch to take a 50-31 lead at halftime.
Bridgewater shot 50.0 percent (18-36) from the floor in the second half to outscore the Cadets 36-27. Norwich shot 32.1 percent (9-28) from the floor in the second half. Curry totaled 13 of the Cadets' 27 points.
Curry totaled a game-high 29 points on the afternoon in addition to three rebounds and two assists. Senior Kristin Brown (Williamstown, Vt.) and junior Kelsey Lotti (South Yarmouth, Mass.) both contributed seven points apiece, while senior Erin Clark (Newbury, Vt.) led the team on the boards with 10 rebounds.
Colleen Hanscom (Melrose, Mass.) led the Bears with a team-high 21 points on 8-14 shooting from the floor. Megan Boutilette (Charlton, Mass.) scored 16 points and completed the double-double with 13 rebounds, while Homich and Jennie Lindland chipped in with 11 and 10 points, respectively.
Norwich will be back in action on Tuesday, as they travel to New London, N.H. for a 7:00 p.m. non-conference tilt with Colby-Sawyer College.
Bates 104, Univ. of Maine-Augusta 83
Bates College defeated the University of Maine-Augusta 104-83 in the consolation game of the 2013 Ed Hockenbury Classic on Saturday afternoon. With the win, the Bobcats improve to 6-4 on the season, while the Moose drop to 4-6 overall.
In the first half, Bates powered to 56-38 halftime lead on the strength of 51.2 percent field goal shooting. The Moose took the early lead on a pair of three-pointers by Arreonte Lee (San Antonio, Texas) and Jennifer Lola (Monmouth, Maine), but Bates would power back and tie the score at 8-8 with 16:07 to play. The Bobcats would quickly sprint to a nine-point lead, but the Moose made one final attack and came within a basket of tying the score at the 8:27 mark.
Kristin Calvo (South Deerfield, Mass.) hit a three-pointer on Bates' next trip down the floor and Meredith Kelly (Cohasset, Mass.) hit a jumper almost a minute later to open the Bobcats' lead back to seven points. The gap opened even further from there, as the Bobcats led by as many as 20 points with 23 seconds left in the half.
The second half continued in similar fashion, as Bates connected on 51.1 percent of field goals, led by Kelly's 8-13 second-half shooting. With her final basket of the half at 8:32, Kelly set a new Bates program record for points in a game with 42. The basket gave the Bobcats a 90-64 lead.
In addition to Kelly's 44 points, the Bobcats saw 15 points by Chelsea Nason (Boxford, Mass.), 12 points by Allaina Murphy (Poland Spring, Maine), and 10 points by Allie Coppola (Tarrytown, N.Y.).
UMA connected on 49.2 percent of field goals over the 40 minutes of action, including a 50 percent performance (15-30) in the second half.
The Moose were led offensively by Lee, who recorded a double-double of 23 points and 12 assists. Jamie Plummer (Richmond, Maine) added a team-best 26 points, while Lola chipped in with 15 points and 10 rebounds.
