WEST POINT, N.Y. – The Norwich University women's rugby team opened its quest for the inaugural ACRA Division I 15s National Championship with a 70-20 victory over Syracuse on Saturday morning at the Anderson Rugby Complex on the campus of the United States Military Academy at West Point.
Senior Joya Clark (Scotia, N.Y.), junior Sophie Mundell (Eagle River, Alaska), and sophomore Ally Day (Gorham, Maine) each had two tries for Norwich (10-0 overall) to lead the Cadets to the victory.
Sarah Whalen (Windsor, Conn.), Shanoui Gunn (Clifton, N.J.), Rose Bernheim (Mountain Home AFB, Idaho), Jackie Derocher (Northwood, N.H.), Meaghan Albert (Lanesborough, Mass.) each scored a try as well for the Cadets.
Norwich built up a 51-0 lead by halftime before pulling all of its starters for the second half.
Norwich will take on American International College (AIC) at 10 a.m. on Sunday in the ACRA Quarterfinals with a berth to the ACRA Final Four on the line at Lake Myrtle Park in Auburndale, Fla. on Dec. 7 and 8.
