Box Score NORTHFIELD, Vt. – The Norwich University women's ice hockey team downed Holy Cross 5-0 to win its fourth straight game on Friday night at Kreitzberg Arena in Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) East action.
Alison Greene (Massena, N.Y.), Rachel Bellio (Denver, Colo.), Madyson Moore (Dubuque, Iowa), Marie Philip Guay (Longueuil, Quebec) and Adelle Murphy (Roseau, Minn.) all tallied goals for the Cadets as they improved to 7-2-2 all-time against Holy Cross.
Greene opened the scoring 8:32 into the game when she slammed home a rebound into a wide open net for her first goal of the season. Sophomore defenseman Taylor Cross (Saugus, Mass.) started the play by finding Meghan Papagno (Wakefield, Mass.) with a long stretch pass to the far blue line from her own zone.
Papagno corralled the pass and walked into the zone. She skated in from the left and crossed through the slot before taking a shot that Holy Cross starting goalie Krista Manzanares got her left pad to. However, she couldn't control the rebound and Greene came in trailing the play to slap the puck into an open right side of the net.
Norwich (4-1-0, 3-0-0 ECAC East) extended its lead to 2-0 just over four minutes later when freshman Kaycie Anderson (Maple Plain, Minn.) picked off an end around pass along the boards by a Holy Cross defenseman, centered a pass to a wide open Bellio, who one-timed the puck into the left corner of the net.
The Cadets broke the game open late in the second period with two goals coming 34 seconds apart to go up 4-0. Moore slapped a shot through Manzanares' five-hole off a feed from Emily MacKinnon (Kirkland, Quebec) at the side boards to make it 3-0 Norwich.
Murphy scored her first collegiate goal moments later when she crashed the net for a rebound and flipped the puck over Manzanares' sprawled out body with a diving effort. Senior forward Tori Charron (Tecumseh, Ontario) and freshman forward Kahnekaro:roks McComber (Kahnawake, Quebec) each picked up assists on the goal.
Guay capped the scoring at the 12:44 mark of the third period with a blast from the blue line on the power play that found its way through traffic and into the back of the net to make it 5-0 Norwich. Kayla Parsons (Fairbanks, Alaska) and Charron picked up assists on the goal.
Norwich junior goalie Taylor Fairchild (Overland Park, Kan.) stopped all five shots she faced to pick up her third win and her second shutout to improve to 3-0-0 on the year for the Cadets.
Norwich outshot Holy Cross 23-5 and was 1-for-3 on the power play, while Holy Cross was 0-for-1. The Cadets handed Holy Cross (3-1-0, 1-1-0 ECAC East) its first loss of the 2013-14 season.
Norwich will look to sweep the weekend when it takes on Salve Regina at 3 p.m. tomorrow at Kreitzberg Arena in another ECAC East matchup.
