Volleyball: Cadets Win Second-Straight in 3-2 Thriller against MCLA

NORTH ADAMS, Mass.—Juniors Kelsey Mancini (Lynnfield, Mass.) and Alex Palmer (South Windsor, Conn.) combined for 25 kills to lead the Norwich University volleyball team to a 3-2 win against the Mass. College of Liberal Arts Tuesday evening in non-conference action.

The win marks the second-straight for the Cadets, who improve to 4-13 on the season. The loss drops MCLA to 7-9.

After winning the first set 25-20, MCLA fought back to win games two and three by scores of 25-23 and 25-21. Norwich posted a commanding 25-15 win in game four to force a fifth set, which they took in a close 15-10 score.

The win marks the first time this year that Norwich has won a five-set match. The Cadets have forced three other five-game matches this season but have been unable to triumph in each outing.

Mancini recorded 13 kills and just three errors to hit at an impressive 28.6 percent. Palmer aided Norwich with a double-double of 12 kills and 22 digs. Tara Lyons (Pocasset, Mass.) added eight kills and 17 digs. Setter Corinne Baita (Rochester, N.H.) dished out 23 assists and also paced the defense with a team-high 25 digs.

MCLA scored 13 points on service aces, as Sam Barbarotta and Courtney Parent both notched five aces apiece. Darien Quick led MCLA's offense with 14 kills, while Julia Christian chipped in with 13 kills. Jackie Paluilis led the defense with 14 digs, while Parent dished out 41 assists.

As a team, Norwich put down 13.6 percent of their 162 attacks for kills. In the fourth game, the Cadets connected hit at 29.6 percent as they totaled 11 team kills with just three errors in 27 attempts. Over the course of the match, MCLA totaled 46 kills in 204 attempts to hit at 4.9 percent.

Norwich travels to Nashua, N.H. on Saturday to take on Rivier University and Johnson & Wales University in a Great Northeast Athletic Conference tri-match. The Cadets will take on Johnson & Wales at 1:00 p.m. and will face the host Raiders at 3:00 p.m.
