Box Score NORTHFIELD, Vt.—Junior Kelsey Mancini (Lynnfield, Mass.) recorded a double-double of 10 kills and 12 digs to lead the Norwich University volleyball team to a 3-0 win against the Spartans of Castleton State College in Wednesday's in-state battle.
The Cadets have now won 13-straight times against the Spartans, dating back to the first match played between the two schools on Sept. 9, 2006. Tonight's game scores were 25-19, 25-18, and 25-21.
With the win, Norwich improves to 6-19 overall, while the loss drops Castleton to 9-13.
Norwich dominated play through all sets in match that saw zero lead changes and no ties. Castleton came within one point of evening the score in the third game, as the Spartans scored 10-straight points on powerful serving by Brittany Brayman to bring the score to 21-20.
Mancini recorded a kill to break up Brayman's serving streak, but a Norwich attack error on the next play kept the one-point margin alive at 22-21. That would mark the closest it would get for Castleton, as Norwich scored the next three points to clinch the match with a 25-21 win in game three.
In addition to Mancini, the Cadets also saw double-digits in the kills column by sophomore Tara Lyons (Pocasset, Mass.), with a match-high 12 kills. Lyons also had an impressive blocking day, tallying three solo blocks and three assisted blocks for Norwich.
Junior Corinne Baita (Rochester, N.H.) dished out 23 assists and led the Cadets in digs with 17 to record a double-double of her own. Sophomore Angie Hershberger (Felton, Calif.) chipped in with 15 digs, while freshman Alex Ruediger (Sandy Lake, Pa.) added 14.
Senior Jennette Chartrand (Poestenkill, N.Y.) tallied six assists and seven digs in her final home game at Norwich.
Castleton saw a match-high 21 digs by Breannon Meuse. Michaela Babineau added 12 digs, while Amanda Chambers and Brayman both totaled 10 digs. Kaylee Pratt aided the Castleton defense with two blocks.
Offensively, the Spartans saw six kills apiece from Chambers and Pratt and four from Brayman.
Norwich combined for 36 kills as a team, while Castleton finished the match with just 17 total kills. The Cadets posted a .046 hitting percentage on the evening while holding the Spartans to a negative attack percentage.
The Cadets return to action on Friday, Nov. 1, when they travel to Anna Maria College for a 7:00 p.m. Great Northeast Athletic Conference match.
