Women's Soccer: Plattsburgh downs Norwich in season finale

Box Score

NORTHFIELD, Vt. – The Norwich University women's soccer team closed out the 2013 season with an 11-0 loss to Plattsburgh State on Tuesday afternoon on Sabine Field at Haynes Family Stadium.

Junior Charisse Abellard had a career high six-point day, tallying two goals and two assists to lead the Plattsburgh offense. Sophomore midfielder Cassidy Clavet notched two goals as well for the Cardinals, who closed out their season with a 5-11-2 overall record.

Diana DiCocco, Melissa Rodriguez, Maddy Trombley, Ashlie Guinness, Sara Elliott, Vicky Scott and Christen Averill each scored a goal as well for Plattsburgh, who improved to 11-1-0 in the all-time series between the two schools.

Norwich freshman goalkeeper Holly Lutz (Hamburg, N.J.) made 11 saves for the Cadets in her second start of her career.

Plattsburgh needed little time to get on the scoreboard as the Cardinals opened the scoring just 36 seconds into the match when DiCocco dribbled through the defense and buried a shot into the left corner of the net.

Norwich was able to hold off the Cardinals until the 37th minute when Averill scored on a header off a flip throw-in from Abellard from the right side of the field.

Just a little over three minutes later, Abellard scored her first of the match with a rocket blast from 25 yards out off a free kick that soared over Lutz's head after she got her fingertips on it.

Plattsburgh added eight more goals in the second half with seven coming in a span of 16 minutes. Clavet one-timed a shot on a cross from the left by Lauren Gonyea in the 54th minute to make it 4-0.

Trombley scored in the 57th minute by trapping a pass from DiCocco, turning to her right and then sliced the ball into the left corner of the net off her left foot. Clavet scored her second of the match in the 59th minute with a blast from the top of the 18 into the right corner of the net.

Scott pushed the lead to 7-0 when she scored into the upper left corner of the net after Devin McMahon headed the ball on off a free kick. Rodriguez scored less than three minutes later with an unassisted goal.

Abellard hooked up again with a teammate on a flip throw for Plattsburgh's ninth goal as Guinness got a head on the ball in the box to flick it into the left corner of the net and past Lutz.

Abellard completed her scoring on the day in the 70th minute with her second goal of the match by chipping the ball over Lutz's head off a pass from Averill.

Elliott closed the scoring in the 77th minute by tapping in a rebound off an initial save by Lutz on Anissa Hartmann's original shot from the right wing.

Norwich's best chance of the match to score came in the 60th minute when junior midfielder Alex Frank (Medford, N.J.) narrowly pushed a free kick wide left in a bid to score in her third straight game.

Kristy Kirkpatrick made two saves for Plattsburgh to pick up the victory.

Norwich closed the season with a 1-16-0 record.
