Box Score NORTHFIELD, Vt. – The Neumann University Knights scored three third period unanswered goals to rally to a 5-3 win over No. 1-ranked Norwich University and claim the 2013 Northfield Savings Bank Holiday Tournament championship on Saturday night at Kreitzberg Arena.
Neumann sophomore forward Chris Bournazos scored two goals, including the game-winning goal on his way to being named the tournament Most Valuable Player. Junior goaltender Braely Torris also made 34 saves, including 19 in the third period to backstop the Knights (7-4-2, 2-4-0 ECAC West) to the upset victory which snapped Norwich's 35-game home unbeaten streak.
Norwich's (11-1-0, 7-0-0 ECAC East) last loss at Kreitzberg Arena also came in the Northfield Savings Bank Holiday Tournament as the Cadets fell 5-1 to Manhattanville on Jan. 1, 2011.
Bournazos notched his second goal of the night and gave Neumann its first lead of the game at the 11:17 mark when he flipped a shot over the blocker of Norwich sophomore goalie Matic Marinsek from the middle of the slot to give the Knights a 4-3 lead.
Jon Low picked up the assist on the goal when he kept the puck in at the blue line and fed Bournazos in the middle of the ice from the side boards. Bournazos collected the pass, turned and wristed the puck past Marinsek to the upper left side of the cage to give Neumann the lead for good.
Jordan Zalba added an insurance tally at the 18:45 mark off an assist from Jake Kratz to cap the scoring on the night.
Heading into the first intermission Norwich looked well on its way to another victory as the Cadets got goals from senior forward Kyle Thomas (Waltham, Mass.) and junior forward Chris Duszynski (Okotoks, Alberta) to take a 2-0 lead after the first 20 minutes.
Thomas wristed a shot off the crossbar and into the back of the net from the top of the slot off assists from Blake Forkey (Boca Raton, Fla.) and Pier-Olivier Cotnoir (Rouyn-Noranda, Quebec) to open the scoring just 1:11 into the game. Duszynski scored his first of two goals on the night at the 6:54 mark off assists from Shane Gorman (Trumbull, Conn.) and Dean Niezgoda (Brewster, Mass.)
Neumann battled back in the second period though as Bournazos finally solved Marinsek with a goal at the 8:17 mark beating Marinsek top shelf on a breakaway to cut the deficit to 2-1. D'Lane Sather leveled the score at 2 at the 18:39 mark when he walked into the slot and wristed a shot past Marinsek off an assist from Scott Farrell just seconds after Niezgoda's high-sticking penalty expired.
Duszynski briefly gave the Cadets the lead again with his sixth goal of the season at the 2:03 mark when he banged the puck past Torris on the doorstep after a tic-tac-toe feed from Gorman and Bryce Currier (Essex Junction, Vt.)
However, Neumann's Steve Gervais tied the game back up at the 6:07 mark of the period when he shot bounced off the glove of Marinsek and trickled behind the NU goalie and over the line off an assist from Brandon Gagne.
Marinsek stopped nine shots for Norwich and suffered the first loss of his NU career to fall to 5-1-0 on the season.
Gorman and Dusyznski were named to the All-Tournament team for Norwich, while Torris and Farrell made the squad for Neumann. Conn. College's JC Cangelosi and UMass-Dartmouth's Steve Ginand rounded out the team.
Norwich outshot Neumann 37-14. In the consolation game earlier in the day, Conn. College defeated UMass-Dartmouth 3-2.
The Cadets will look to bounce back on Tuesday night when they travel over the mountain to take on arch-rival Middlebury at the Chip Kenyon '85 Arena.
