Box Score NEWTON, Mass.—The Lasell College men's basketball team posted a 14-6 point advantage in overtime en route to a 68-60 overtime win against the Cadets of Norwich University on Tuesday evening in Great Northeast Athletic Conference action.
With the win, the Cadets fall to 5-14 overall and 2-10 in GNAC action, while the win boosts the Lasers to 4-16 overall and 3-10 in league play.
The Cadets saw a career-high of 15 points from freshman Gary Gladden (Boynton Beach, Fla). Senior Josh Cabrera (Providence, R.I.) added 12 points and a team-high seven rebounds, while freshmen Alex Preckol (Westford, Mass.) and Jimmy Warden (North Andover, Mass.) both added eight points.
Angel Ortiz led the Lasers with 18 points and nine rebounds. Frank Apisa contributed 17 points on 5-10 shooting from the floor and 7-10 shooting from the free-throw line, while Brock Walters rounded out Lasell's top scorers with 15 points.
The Cadets led for most of the game, taking the lead at 5-2 in the first half and not relinquishing the advantage until there was 2:35 left in the second half. A three-point basket evened the score at 52-52. Mike Vallone then hit a layup to put Lasell up by two points with 1:43 to play, but a layup by Norwich's Warden knotted the score at 54-54 and sent the game into overtime.
The Lasers wasted no time taking control of the additional five minutes, as Walters connected on a three-point basket and Apisa hit a jump shot to give the Lasers an early five-point advantage.
The Cadets were able to cut the Lasers' lead to three on a jump shot by Cabrera at the 1:43 mark, but the Cadets were forced to foul, allowing Apisa and Ortiz to combine for seven made free throws in the final 48 seconds of the game.
Both teams had similar games from the floor, as Norwich connected on 37.3 percent of field goals (25-67) and Lasell hit 37.9 percent of shot attempts from the floor (22-58). The Lasers held a 17-6 advantage from the free-throw line and a 7-4 advantage from three-point range.
Norwich returns to action on Thursday when it hosts Rivier University in GNAC action at 7:00 p.m. The two teams have met once this season, with Rivier claiming the 60-46 win at home.
