Women's Hockey: Charron's natural hat trick propels No. 5 Norwich past New England College 5-2

HENNIKER N.H – Junior forward Tori Charron (Tecumseh, Ontario) recorded a natural hat trick to lead the No. 5-ranked Norwich University women's ice hockey team to a 5-2 victory over New England College on Friday afternoon at the Lee Clement Arena in Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) East action.

After battling to a 1-1 tie after 20 minutes, senior co-captain Stephanie Invernizzi (Hingham, Mass.) scored 5:43 into the second stanza to give Norwich the lead for good. From there it was the Charron show as the Elmira College transfer scored her team-leading 16th, 17th, and 18th goals of the season to put the game away for good.

Charron notched her first at the 7:53 mark of the second off a feed from senior co-captain Jillayne DeBus (Howell, Mich.) to make it 3-1 Norwich. She added another tally at the 14:47 mark of the second period to increase the Cadets' lead to 4-1.

Charron capped the natural hat trick at the 9:32 mark of the third period with an unassisted tally to give Norwich a 5-1 lead.

New England College got one back at the 15:46 mark of the third period with Madyson Moore notching her second goal of the night to cut the lead to 5-2. However, that's as close as the Pilgrims would get.

Moore gave NEC a brief 1-0 lead late in the first period only to have Norwich junior forward Renee Lortie (Cornwall, Ontario) scored her 10th goal of the season 44 seconds later to tie the game up at 1 heading into the first intermission.

Norwich outshot NEC 34-17 and went 1-for-2 on the power play while NEC was 0-for-1.

Junior goalie Kelly Fisk (Hannibal, N.Y.) improved to 4-1-1 on the year after turning aside 16 shots to pick up the victory. Lauren Hopps made 29 saves for NEC in the loss to drop to 4-6-4.

Norwich extended its season-high winning streak to seven straight games and the Cadets continue their road trip tomorrow at Castleton when they take on the Spartans at 3 p.m. in another ECAC East contest.
