Box Score BIDDEFORD, Maine – The No. 1-ranked Norwich University men's ice hockey team got goals from five different players en route to a 5-2 victory over the Univ. of New England on Friday night in Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) East action.
With three of its top-six forwards out of the lineup, Norwich (15-2-0, 10-1-0 ECAC East) got offensive production from a couple of new faces including sophomore defenseman Bryce Currier (Essex Junction, Vt.) and freshman forward Ben Morgan (Calgary, Alberta) stepping up with goals.
Senior forwards Colin Mulvey (Worcester, Mass.) and Blake Forkey (Boca Raton, Fla.), as well as junior forward Travis Janke (Swift Current, Sask.) scored as well for the Cadets.
Clinging to a slim 3-2 lead, Morgan scored with 6:50 left in the third period to give Norwich some breathing room before Mulvey added an empty netter in the final minute to cap the scoring and make it 5-2 Cadets.
Morgan took a pass from sophomore forward Nevin Lawler (Fitchburg, Mass.) from behind the goal and then slipped the puck into the bottom right corner of the net from the middle of the slot to give the Cadets a two-goal lead.
Currier opened the scoring at the 4:54 mark of the first period beating UNE goalie Colby Drost with a snipe to the top right corner of the net after taking a pass from freshman defenseman Ryan Whitell (Calgary, Alberta). Whitell walked out from the near side boards and then flipped a backhand back to Currier at the point. Currier took the pass and fired a shot over Drost's glove to make it 1-0 Norwich.
Just 33 seconds later, Forkey tallied his third goal of the season after coming out of the corner and wristing a shot past Drost off an assist from Duszynski to increase the Norwich lead to 2-0.
UNE (5-12-0, 3-9-0 ECAC East) cut into Norwich's lead just 3:14 into the second period when Adam Laite stuffed home a loose puck in the crease on the power play to make it 2-1. Sean Sullivan assisted on the goal after he threw the puck from behind net off of Whitell's skate.
Janke regained the two-goal lead a little over three minutes later when he scored off a rebound after sophomore defenseman Alec Thieda (Rochester Hills, Mich.) had his shot initially saved by Drost.
However, UNE answered right back 32 seconds later when Zeth Zielinski beat NU junior goaltender Chris Czarnota (Wakefield, Mass.) with a wrist shot to the far post past the Cadet goalie's blocker to cut the deficit to one again.
Czarnota picked up his eighth win of the season after making 17 saves for Norwich. He improved to 8-1-0. Drost made 35 saves in the loss to fall to 2-3-0 on the year for the Nor'Easters.
The Cadets continue their Maine road trip tomorrow when they take on Southern Maine at 4 p.m. in another ECAC East tilt.
