Swimming: Cadets Excel at Elms in Preparation for NEISDAs

Chicopee, Mass.— Junior Patrick Bowden (Cumberland, Maine) tallied four victories and the Norwich University swimming and diving teams put forth a strong effort Saturday at Elms College as they prepare for the NEISDA championships in early February.

The men defeated the Blazers, 159-87, while the women fell 121-62 in one of its strongest performances to date.

The Cadets got off to a strong start, capturing the meet's second event of the day: the men's 200 meter medley relay. The team of Lance Webster (Windham, Maine), Bowden, Brandon Kelly, (Centreville, Md.) and Travis Marks (Grass Valley, Calif.) hit the wall in 2:00.30 to earn the Cadets 11 points.

Webster, a sophomore, continued his domination of the freestyle two events later, besting the field in the 800 meter, and then again later in the 400.

Kelly also continued his impressive junior season, winning the 50 meter backstroke by more than three full seconds.

But the star of the day was Bowden. After the win in the team relay, he earned nine points for Norwich in both the 50 and 100 meter breastrokes, as well as the 100 meter individual medley.

Freshman Timothy Burrow (Amherst, Mass.) also won a closely-contested 200 meter freestyle.

Norwich closed the men's day on a positive note as well, as the team of sophomore Patrick Ogden (Madison, Ala.), Patrick Boyle (Cary, N.C.), Chris Hevey (Biddeford, Maine) and Marks captured the 200 meter freestyle relay in 1:49.01.

On the women's side, the star of the day was junior Victoria Sabel (Plainville, Conn.). Sabel has been the most consistent Cadet and she proved it again in dominating the 800 freestyle, winning by nearly 45 seconds. She also won the 400 freestyle.

The Cadets earned nine points in the 50 meter butterfly courtesy of junior Kelsey Baker (Austin, Texas), who finished in just under 57 seconds. They earned nine more in the 100 meter individual medley when Giovanna Stein (Sao, Paulo, Brazil) finished first. They got four more in the event as Baker finished second.

The Cadets will be back in action Tuesday when they host St. Michael's College at Goodyear Pool.
