Box Score NORTHFIELD, Vt.—Sophomore guard Aliah Curry (Windsor, Mass.) hit a pair of free-throws with 7.3 seconds left to lift the Norwich University women's basketball team to a 58-56 win against the Lasers of Lasell College in Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) action on Thursday evening.
With the win, the Cadets improve to 8-9 overall and 2-2 in GNAC play, while the loss drops the Lasers to 6-8 overall and 1-2 in league play.
Curry's free-throws were part of her 29-point performance as she connected on a season-best seven three-pointers. She shot 8-20 from the floor, including 7-13 from behind the arc, and finished a perfect 6-6 from the foul line. Junior Kristine Brammer (Littleton, N.H.) added 10 points for Norwich, while Erin Clark (Newbury, Vt.) recorded a team-high nine rebounds and junior Kristin Brown (Williamstown, Vt.) recorded game-highs in assists with eight and steals with four.
The Lasers saw a double-double performance of 10 points and 14 rebounds by Danielle Autencio. Alexis Chappell aided the Lasers with 11 points and six rebounds, while Kim Archibald chipped in with 10 points.
Tied 54-54 with 52 seconds to play, the Lasers would have the perfect opportunity to claim the lead for the first time of the game as Danielle Autencio was fouled while securing a rebound. Autencio would miss both of her foul shots, allowing the Cadets to rebound the ball and get a quick layup by Jessalyn Sweeney (Stanfordville, N.Y.) to for the 56-54 lead with 39 seconds to play.
The Lasers were quick to respond as Chappell connected for a layup just ten seconds later to knot the score for just the second time of the game with 29 seconds to play. A foul by Lasell would set Curry up for the game-winning foul shots, as Lasell was unable to capitalize on their final possession, which resulted in a turnover on an offensive foul with one second on the clock.
Norwich would control the lead for most of the second half and led by a game-high 12 points with 10:26 left in the game, but Lasell used 58.3 percent shooting in the second half to build a comeback. The Lasers cut Norwich's lead to one point with 5:33 to play, but allowed the Cadets to build their advantage back to four points before two fouls shots by Kayla Vincelette and a layup by Autencio knotted the score for the first time at 54-54 with 3:34 to play. Both teams would go scoreless for almost three minutes, as neither team could connect until Sweeney's basket at 0:39.
Curry would notch 14 of her 29 points in the first half on four three-point baskets and a pair of free throws. The Cadets, who took an early lead in the first half on Curry's first three-pointer of the half, would not relinquish the lead and led by as many as eight points with 6:53 to play.
Lasell shot 47.9 percent from the floor through two halves, while Norwich shot 39.6 percent from the floor including 43.8 percent shooting from three-point range.
Norwich returns to action on Saturday when it travels to Rivier University for a 1:00 p.m. GNAC matchup.
