Box Score 2 NORTHFIELD, Vt.—Southern Vermont finished 2-0 in non-conference tri-match action on Sunday afternoon at Andrews Gymnasium, posting 3-0 wins against Maine Maritime and host Norwich. Maine Maritime also posted a 3-2 win against Norwich in the first game of the day.
With today's results, Southern Vermont improves to 12-1 on the season, Maine Maritime improves to 7-7 and Norwich falls to 6-8 overall.
In the first match of the day, Norwich trailed in the opening points of the first game as Maine Maritime's Ariel Knights (Brookton, Maine) opened the match by serving six-straight points, giving the Mariners a 6-2 advantage. Norwich would trail until the final points of the game when Haley Vermes (Westborough, Mass.) served four-straight points to give the Cadets their first lead at 23-21. The Cadets would solidify the 25-22 win.
After taking game two 27-25, the Mariners would come back to force a fifth game by winning games three and four by scores of 25-21 and 15-13, respectively.
Leading the offensive effort for the Cadets was Tara Lyons (Pocasset, Mass.) who posted a season-high 13 kills. MaryRose Meany (Goshen, N.Y.) added 12 kills for Norwich, while Kelsey Mancini (Lynnfild, Mass.) posted 11 kills. Corinne Baita (Rochester, N.H.) dished out a season-high 45 assists and Alex Palmer (South Windsor, Conn.) recorded a season-high 31 digs.
The Mariners were led by Knights with 12 kills. Molly Marcotte (Seekonk, Mass.) added nine kills and 20 digs for Maine Maritime, while Jennifer Nixon (Woodstock, Md.) dished out a team-high 33 assists.
Norwich posted a team-best .217 hitting percentage in game three, but the Mariners responded with .231 hitting in game four to force the fifth game. In the final game, Maine Maritime recorded eight kills with five errors to Norwich's seven kills and six errors to clinch the win.
In the second match of the day, the Mariners fell to the Mountaineers of Southern Vermont College 3-0 by scores of 25-21, 25-14, and 25-17.
The Mountaineers offense was sparked by a match-high 15 kills from senior outside hitter Jessica Alvarez (Los Angeles, Calif.) Alvarez also added three service aces and seven digs in her first match of the day. Teammates Carrie Baltazar (Whittier, Calif.) and Sheilani Kaleopa (Riverside, Calif.) split setting duties for the Mountaineers and posted 17 and 12 assists, respectively. Libero Cindyline Sevilla (Los Angeles, Calif.) posted a match-high 14 digs, while Vivian Delgado (La Puente, Calif.) added 12 digs for Southern Vermont.
The Mariners were led by Sydney Robertson (Barnstead, N.H.) with a team-high five kills. Dixon dished out eight assists for Maine Maritime, and Marcotte recorded a team-best seven digs.
The Mountaineers averaged an attack percentage of .167 on the afternoon while holding the Mariners to 16 kills and 16 errors for a .000 attack percentage.
In the nightcap, Southern Vermont posted a 3-0 against Norwich by game scores of 25-17, 25-9, and 25-18.
The Cadets were led by Vermes with seven kills. Both Lyons and Palmer added eight digs for Norwich. Lyons also added three blocks for Norwich.
The Mountaineers were led by Sarah Graham (Moreno Valley, Calif.) who posted a match-high 10 kills. Baltazar and Kaleopa totaled 18 and 11 assists, respectively, while Sevilla led the Mountaineers' defense with 11 digs.
The Cadets return to action on Wednesday when they host Rivier University at 7:00 p.m. in Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) action.
