Baseball: Suffolk Takes Doubleheader as Norwich Concludes Season

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

NORTHFIELD, Vt. – Suffolk University took both games of a Great Northeast Athletic Conference doubleheader against Norwich University Sunday, April 22, at Garrity Field. The Rams won game one 6-1 before rallying from a 2-0 deficit to claim the second game, 5-3. Norwich closes out its season at 4-33 overall and 1-15 in conference play.

Suffolk (17-20-1, 11-5 GNAC) jumped out to a 2-0 lead after two innings in the opener, scoring runs off a first-inning passed ball and a second-inning RBI single by Mac Jacobson. SU would tack on two more runs in both the fifth and sixth innings to account for the 6-1 final.

Jacobson went 2-for-2 with two RBIs and a run scored from the nine-hole for the Rams. Teammate Jake Cintulo added a two-run triple to the centerfield fence in the fifth inning. Brian Svensson (1-0) picked up his first win of the season, allowing zero earned runs on four hits with two strikeouts in a complete-game effort.

Junior outfielder Jonathan Philbrook (Rochester, Mass./Old Colony) registered the lone Norwich run when he scored on a passed ball in the bottom of the third inning. Philbrook went 2-for-3 with two doubles at the plate for NU. Junior Brad Hudson (Eugene, Ore./South Eugene) fell to 0-5 with the loss.

The Cadets grabbed an early 2-0 advantage of their own in the second game, when Philbrook and sophomore shortstop Devin Cilley (Tunbridge, Vt./South Royalton) had RBI hits in the second frame. The lead would be short-lived, however, as the Rams scored three runs right back in the top of the third inning.

Norwich would tie the game in the fifth, when junior second baseman J.J. Losco (Wakefield, Mass./Wakefield) drove in freshman designated hitter Brandon Place (Concord, N.H./Concord) with a two-out RBI single.

Mike Cunningham broke the deadlock in the top of the seventh with a two-run single to make it 5-3. Cunningham was one of four Rams' players to have two hits on the game.

Cilley went 2-for-3 with a double, a RBI and a run scored to lead the NU offense in the nightcap. Senior Alexandro Cardoza (Cicero, Ill./Cristo Rey Jesuit) allowed four earned runs on ten hits over 6.1 innings. The lefthander struck out five and walked one in his final appearance for the Maroon and Gold.
