Box Score 2 PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Johnson & Wales University captured both games of a Great Northeast Athletic Conference baseball doubleheader versus Norwich Sunday, April 1. The Wildcats took game one, 6-3, before claiming a 4-2 decision in the nightcap.
JWU (13-8, 4-0 GNAC) scored four runs on four hits in the first inning to gain control of the opener. James Reyes went 2-for-4 with a double and two RBIs to lead the team for the game. Brian Olofson added a two-RBI double in the decisive first inning.
Aldo Morales (2-4) went the distance on the mound for the Wildcats, striking out nine while allowing three runs on seven hits.
Freshman Brandon Place (Concord, N.H./Concord) took the loss for the Cadets (2-17, 0-4 GNAC) to fall to 0-3. Senior Seth Knihtila (Westminster, Mass./Oakmont Regional) pitched two scoreless innings of relief.
Junior second baseman J.J. Losco (Wakefield. Mass./Wakefield) went 2-for-3 with a double and a run batted in to pace Norwich at the plate.
Norwich jumped out to a 2-0 lead in game two but struggled to find any offense in the contest after that. Losco picked up the two Norwich hits as he once again went 2-for-3.
Junior Brad Hudson (Eugene, Ore./South Eugene) suffered the loss for NU despite pitching the team's first complete game of the season. The right-hander gave up two earned runs on six hits while striking out three and walking five.
Shawn Haugh (3-0) pitched all seven innings to earn the win for JWU. He allowed two hits while striking out eight and walking three. James Reyes and Joe Coppola both went 2-for-3 to lead Johnson & Wales at the dish. Reyes also had two RBIs.
Norwich will host Daniel Webster for a home-opening non-conference doubleheader Tuesday, April 3, at Garrity Field. First pitch of game one is at 2 p.m.
