Women's Basketball: Norwich Suffers 66-59 Setback to Colby-Sawyer

NORTHFIELD, Vt.—Despite a 26-point performance by sophomore guard Aliah Curry (Windsor, Mass.), the Norwich University women's basketball team suffered its first setback of the season, falling 66-59 to Colby-Sawyer College in non-conference action on Tuesday evening. 

The Cadets now stand 3-1 overall, while the visiting Chargers improve to 1-2 on the season.

Norwich would take an early five-point lead on an old-fashioned three-point play by Curry five minutes into the first half, but the Chargers would tie the score at 10 points apiece three minutes later.  The two teams would exchange the lead until 9:47 left to play in the half, when the Chargers would tie it again on a jumper by Jessica Shenkel. 

Norwich would extend their lead to as much as six points in the final minutes of the first half, but the Chargers would fight back to trail by only one entering halftime.

The Cadets held the lead for most of the second half and led by five points with eight minutes to play. The Chargers would respond with five-straight points to even the score at 54-54.  The tie marked the fifth between the two teams.

A jumper by Kelsey Bragdon and a free throw by Kelsey Cahill would put the Chargers up by three points, but Norwich would respond immediately with a three-pointer by Curry to tie the score at 57-57 with 3:48 to play.

Colby-Sawyer would outscore the Cadets 9-2 in the final 3:15 of the game to clinch the 66-59 non-conference win.

In addition to Curry, the Cadets saw 15 points from senior Jessalyn Sweeney (Standfordville, N.Y.).  Junior Kristine Brammer (Littleton, N.H.) led the Cadets on the boards with 17 rebounds, while classmateErin Clark (Newbury, Vt.) totaled 11 rebounds and nine points.

Cahill posted a double-double for the Chargers, totaling 10 points and 12 rebounds. The Chargers were also led by offensively by Cailin Bullet with 16 points and Taylor DeSanty, who chipped in with 13.  Ashley Fruzzetti rounded out the Chargers' double-digit scorers by contributing 11 points.

Norwich returns to action this weekend, hosting Saint Joseph College of Vermont on Friday, November 30 at 6:00 p.m. in the opening game of the 2012 Hockenbury Classi
