Box Score NORTHFIELD, Vt. – The No. 1-ranked Norwich University women's hockey team got goals from six different players en route to a 6-0 win over UMass-Boston on Friday night at Kreitzberg Arena in Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) East action.
Junior forward Tori Charron (Tecumseh, Ontario) scored what turned out to be the eventual game-winning goal less than a minute into the second period and also added two more assists to lead the Cadets' offense.
Junior defenseman Kayla Parsons (Fairbanks, Alaska) tallied a goal and an assist while classmate Marie-Philip Guay (Longueuil, Quebec) chipped in with two assists as well for Norwich, (5-0-2, 5-0-0 ECAC East) who extended its conference regular season unbeaten streak to 44 straight games.
After a scoreless first period, Charron finally got NU on the board just 36 seconds into the second period by tapping a shot off the post and into the back of the net on the doorstep of the crease off assists from Renee Lortie (Cornwall, Ontario) and Parsons.
Parsons extended the lead to 2-0 at the 12:16 mark, once again on the power play, beating UMass-Boston goalie Casey Schaejbe five-hole after collecting a deflected shot off the stick of Charron. Guay also picked up an assist on the goal.
Norwich broke the game wide open early in the third, tallying three goals in a little over a 3:30 to take a commanding 5-0 lead. Freshman forward Madison Gallagher (Kirkland, Quebec) scored her first collegiate goal by roofing a shot over Schaejbe with an assist from Guay.
Taylor Cross (Saugus, Mass.) scored her second goal of the season and the Cadets' third on the power play in the game by blasting a shot through traffic at the point that Schaejbe never saw. Paige Foster (Slave Lake, Alberta) and Lortie picked up assists on the goal coming at 4:05 of the third period.
Freshman forward Nicolette Gosselin (Barre, Vt.) also tallied her first collegiate goal just over a minute later when she tipped a shot from Maggie Cross into the back of the net to make it 5-0 Norwich and force UMass-Boston to use its timeout.
Freshman forward Alison Greene (Massena, N.Y.) capped the scoring with her fourth goal on the year at the 17:59 mark of the third period with an assist from Charron. Charron picked the pocket of a UMass-Boston defender and then fed a perfect pass tape to tape to Greene who slid the puck past Kailyn Burke for the sixth NU goal on the night.
Sophomore goalie Loren Carrier (Chandler, Ariz.) stopped all eight shots she faced to pick up second shutout of the season and improve to 4-0-2 on the year. Schaejbe made 20 stops for UMasss-Boston and took the loss to fall to 1-3-1 on the season.
Charron's three points bring her nation-leading total to 14 on the season. She has eight goals and six assists so far in her first season in the Maroon & Gold after spending two seasons at Elmira College.
Norwich closes out its Pre-Thanksgiving schedule tomorrow afternoon when it hosts Saint Anselm at 3 p.m. at Kreitzberg Arena.
