Box Score PLYMOUTH, N.H. – Sophomore Aliah Curry (Windsor, Mass.) and senior Jessalyn Sweeney (Stanfordville, N.Y.) combined to 47 points Friday evening as Norwich University defeated Elms College, 77-52, in the opening round of the Comfort Inn of Ashland Women's Basketball Tip-Off Tournament at Plymouth State University's Foley Gym.
Curry led the way with a game-high 27 points, converting 11-of-24 shots from the floor and 3-of-9 from three-point range, while Sweeney added 20 points on 7-of-13 shooting, including 4-of-7 from long range. Sophomore Kelsey Lotti (South Yarmouth, Mass.) chipped in with 11 points off the bench, making 3-of-5 three-point attempts.
Senior Jen Normandie (Westford, Mass.) and sophomore Denisha Parks (Fall River, Mass.) led the Blazers with 10 points apiece, while sophomores JC Pickett (Chicopee, Mass.) and Gianna Youngblood (East Freetown, N.Y.) added nine points each. Pickett and Parks shared team-high rebounding honors with eight apiece, but the Blazers were out-rebounded by a 47-39 count.
Norwich jumped out to a double-digit lead (15-5) just five minutes into the game and never looked back. The Cadets led by a dozen at the midway point (24-12) and took a 14-point margin into the locker room. Curry had 17 of her 27 points in the opening frame.
The Cadets scored the first six points of the second half to open up a 20-point margin, and Elms got no closer than 17 points the rest of the way.
The Cadets (1-0) will play in the tournament's championship game Saturday at 3:00 p.m. against Eastern Nazarene College (2-0), as the Lions defeated host Plymouth State in the tournament opener, 78-49. Elms will meet PSU in the consolation game at 1:00 p.m.
