Football: Cadets Down Becker 47-14 in Regular Season Finale

Box Score

LEICESTER, Mass.—Senior quarterback Kris Sabourin (Georgia, Vt.) totaled three touchdowns and 203 yards of total offense to lead the Norwich University football team to a 47-14 win against Eastern Collegiate Football Conference (ECFC) foe Becker College on Saturday afternoon at Alumni Field.  With the win, the Cadets conclude the regular season with a 7-2 overall record and a 4-2 record in ECFC action, while the loss drops the Hawks at 3-7 overall and 2-5 in league play.

Sabourin finished 8-17 with 115 passing yards and one touchdown while also adding 88 yards and two touchdowns rushing.

Senior Danny Triplett (Haverhill, Mass.) also totaled high numbers for the Cadets, rushing for 128 yards on 12 carries while catching a 26-yard pass for a touchdown.

Norwich opened scoring on the first drive of the game, starting with a 22 yard kickoff return by Sam Chaves (Alfred, Mass.) to begin the drive on the Norwich 37-yard line.  The Cadets would then use five-straight rushing plays to travel 63 yards in just over two minutes, resulting in a Sabourin 14-yard touchdown run at the 12:49 mark.  A two-point conversion attempt by Norwich failed, giving the Cadets the early 6-0 lead.

Becker responded on the next drive, using 12 plays to travel 75 yards to score on a four-yard run by Joseph Geck.  A blocked point-after attempt would even the score at 6-6 with 7:14 left to play in the first quarter.

Norwich recorded two more scores in the first quarter, as Triplett caught a 26-yard pass from Sabourin to score with 2:19 to play in the quarter and defensive back Ethan Hanks (Hull, Mass.) returned an interception for 31 yards to score 43 seconds later.  Kicker Mike Schreiner (St. Albans, Vt.) finished 1-for-2 on point after attempts in the first quarter, giving the Cadets the 19-6 lead.

Second quarter scoring was also dominated by Norwich, as Sabourin scored on a 22-yard run at the 3:18 mark and senior offensive lineman Sean Southworth (Exeter, N.H.) recorded his first collegiate touchdown on a one-yard run with 1:06 to play in the half. Schreiner connected on both point-after attempts to extend the Cadets' lead 33-6.

The Cadets extended their lead to 40-6 4:29 into the second half as the Cadets used 10 plays to travel 72 yards, resulting in a three-yard rush by Derrick Pitts (Schenectady, N.Y.) and a successful point-after attempt by Schreiner.

With 2:52 to play in the third quarter, the Becker's Josh Lawrence sacked Sabourin in the end zone to score the safety, bringing the score to 40-8.

Norwich would record their final score of the day on their second drive of the fourth quarter.  The Cadets used four rushing plays and a complete pass to score on third-down on a 33-yard rush by Chaves.  Schreiner connected on his fifth point-after attempt of the day to bring Norwich's point total to 47.

Becker recorded their final score on the next drive, as quarterback Robert Baker found teammate Corinthian Bostic on third-and-seven for a 75-yard pass with 6:16 to play in the game.

The Norwich defense was led by Stephen Gilmore (Norton, Mass.), who totaled 10 tackles.  Luis Delgado (Accord, N.Y.) and Matt Simonelli (Scituate, R.I.) both added six tackles apiece, while Simonelli and Dane Pallotto (Westbrook, Conn.) both recorded interceptions. All three also totaled sacks on the afternoon.

The Cadets, who wrap up the 2012 regular season on a four-game winning streak, will now await word of a slot in an Eastern Collegiate Athletic Conference (ECAC) Bowl game. The ECAC will release post-season matchups on Monday, Nov.12.
