Swimming: Cadet Men Dominate Colby-Sawyer in First Victory

New London, N.H.—After a solid opening-weekend performance at Potsdam last Saturday, the Norwich University Swimming and Diving teams continued to improve on the road at Colby-Sawyer Saturday.

The men's side captured a decisive 179-89 victory thanks to a fast start. In the meet's second event, the Cadets captured the 200 yard medley relay in a time of 1:46.41 behind the team of Lance Webster (Windham, Maine), Travis Marks (Grass Valley, Calif.), Brandon Kelly (Centreville, Maine) and Patrick Bowden (Cumberland, Maine).

Webster also captured the 1650 yard freestlye for the second consecutive week to continue a strong start to his season. He added a victory in the 200 yard backstroke and his win in the 1650 broke the Colby-Sawyer pool record by an astonishing 18 seconds.

The Cadets also excelled at shorter distances Saturday as Marks took first in the 100 yard breastroke and freshman Peter Burtt (Harpswell, Maine) finished first in the 200 yard butterfly. Both victories marked the first of both swimmers collegiate careers.

Bowden continues to be a top competitor for Norwich after capturing the 50 yard freestyle and 200 yard breastroke while Marks and Samuel Spake (Lexington, N.C.) finished right behind him in the 200.

Senior Andrew Grubbs (York, Pa.) also gave the Cadets a win in the 500 yard freestyle and the Cadets continued to give strong performances on the diving board as David Rhoden (Farmington, Conn.), Will Harris (Holbrook, N.Y.) and Stephen Resto (Montgomery, N.Y.) went 1-2-3 at the one meter level.

Finally, Kelly captured the 100 yard butterfly in 56.26 and was also part of the Cadet team that won the 200 yard freestyle relay.

The women's side dropped to 0-2 after falling 173-45 but Norwich continued to turn in strong performances. Junior Victoria Sabel (Plainville, Conn.) remains a threat in the 1000 yard freestyle after finishing second in 12:36.67.

Sabel and captain Giovanna Stein (Sao Paulo, Brazil) went 2-3 in the 200 yard freestyle to give Norwich seven points in the event.

On the diving board, Justina George (Wallingford, Conn.) earned four points for the Cadets at the one meter level.

Norwich is back in action Wednesday at St. Michaels.
