Box Score NORTHFIELD, Vt. – The No. 2-nationally ranked Norwich University men's ice hockey team stayed perfect on the season with a 7-1 win over the University of New England on Saturday afternoon at Kreitzberg Arena in Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) East action.
Norwich (3-0-0, 3-0-0 ECAC East) was led offensively by a trio of senior forwards in Colin Mulvey (Worcester, Mass.), Pier-Olivier Cotnoir (Rouyn-Noranda, Quebec) and Kyle Thomas (Waltham, Mass.) scoring two goals apiece, while junior forward Travis Janke (Swift Current, Sask.) added four primary assists.
Senior forward Tory Allan (Davidson, Sask.) added the other Norwich goal as the Cadets have now outscored their opponents 19-3 through three games and extended their home unbeaten streak to 32 straight games.
The Mulvey/Janke/Allan line provided NU more than enough offense in the first period alone as the trio accounted for all three Cadet goals to build up a 3-0 lead heading into the first intermission that Norwich would never look back from.
Mulvey opened the scoring at the 4:27 mark of the first period scoring on the power play off assists from Janke and Allan. Mulvey finally slammed home the puck after a scrum in front of the UNE net.
He scored again at the 11:00 minute mark of the first beating UNE goaltender Craig Ryan five-hole on a wrist shot from the left wing. Janke and Allan once again combined for the assists.
Allan made it 3-0 Norwich at the 14:46 mark of the first period by scoring on the power play off assists from Janke and Mulvey.
Cotnoir scored his first of the night at the 5:51 mark of the second period off assists from Bryce Currier (Essex Junction, Vt.) and Shane Gorman (Trumbull, Conn.). He added another goal at the 15:01 mark of the period coming shorthanded off a feed from Janke. Cotnoir blasted a one-timer past Ryan to the bottom right corner of the net to make it 5-0 Norwich after two periods.
UNE (1-3-0, 1-3-0 ECAC East) finally broke up the shutout 47 seconds into the third period when Adam Laite lit the lamp for the Nor'Easters off assists from Sam Vikich and Zeth Zielinski.
Norwich pumped home two more goals from Thomas before the final buzzer to cap the scoring for the night. Blake Forkey (Boca Raton, Fla.) assisted on both goals while Currier and Cotnoir each assisted on one as well.
Norwich head coach Mike McShane played his third different goalie in as many games as junior Chris Czarnota (Wakefield, Mass.) got the start in goal stopping nine shots to pick up the victory. Ryan made 20 saves in a losing effort for UNE.
The Cadets gave up just 20 shots on the weekend and in Saturday's game they held UNE without a shot for 32 minutes between the 1:15 mark of the first period and the 13:15 mark of the second stanza.
Norwich hits the road for the first time in the 2012-13 regular season when the Cadets travel down to Saint Anselm and New England College next Friday and Saturday for another ECAC East pair of games.
