Men's Hockey: Mulvey lifts Norwich past Trois-Rivieres 5-4 in OT

Box Score

NORTHFIELD, Vt. – Senior forward Colin Mulvey (Worcester, Mass.) scored 27 seconds into overtime to complete his hat trick, as well as lift the Norwich University men's hockey team to a 5-4 win over Trois-Rivieres in a wild exhibition game on Friday night at Kreitzberg Arena.

Mulvey took a pass from sophomore defenseman Alec Thieda (Rochester Hills, Mich.) and ripped a shot that squeezed past Trois-Rivieres goaltender Guillaume Nadeau short side and just trickled over the goal line to send the NU Corps of Cadets heavy crowd into bedlam.

Norwich needed just 1:07 to open the scoring as junior forward Travis Janke (Swift Current, Saskatchewan) tipped a shot from the point by Tory Allan (Davidson, Saskatchewan) out of midair to beat Trois-Rivieres starting goaltender Marc-Antoine Gelinas five-hole and give the Cadets a 1-0 lead.

The Cadets made it 2-0 at the 8:11 mark of the first when Mulvey scored his first of the night by collecting his own rebound and banking the puck off of Gelinas into the back of the net from the right side of the goal. Senior forward Blake Forkey (Boca Raton, Fla.) and Allan recorded assists on the goal.

Trois-Rivieres cut the deficit to 2-1 at the 14:37 mark when Maxime Paquet-Gravel scored his first of two goals off assists from Tommy Tremblay and Pierre-Luc Lessard.

Mulvey notched his second goal of the night 1:48 into the second period once again off an assist from Allan to extend the Norwich lead to 3-1.

Trois-Rivieres battled back again however and tied the game up at 3-3 with goals from Antoine Quevillon and Paquet-Gravel at the 5:28 and 9:34 marks respectively of the second period.

The Patriots took their one and only lead of the game 3:52 into the third period when Emmanuel Boudreau poked a loose puck in front of the net under Norwich sophomore goaltender Matic Marinsek (Ljubljana, Slovenia) off an assist from Charles Bety to give UQTR a 4-3 lead.

Janke finally ended Trois-Rivieres scoring run at the 12:52 mark of the third period when he tipped home a pass from Mulvey into a wide open left side of the net to knot the game up at four.

Mulvey finished the night with three goals and an assist, while Janke added two and Allan tallied three assists to lead the Norwich offense.

Marinsek ended up picking up the win after Norwich head coach Mike McShane split each of three goaltenders a period. Marinsek made five saves in his 20:27 of action. Carroll played the first period making six saves, including two impressive stops to thwart breakaway attempts for Trois-Rivieres. Czarnota made six saves in the second period as well for Norwich.

Guillaume Nadeau was saddled with the loss for the Patriots after coming in for Gelinas after Norwich went up 3-1. Nadeau made 16 saves on 18 shots in 38:39.

Friday night's exhibition wrapped up the Cadets' preseason schedule and for the second straight year NU split with Dartmouth and Trois-Rivieres. Dartmouth edged Norwich 4-3 last Sunday in Hanover, N.H. Last season, Dartmouth beat Norwich 3-1 before the Cadets came back a week later to shutout Trois-Rivieres 3-0.

Norwich opens its 103rd year of hockey with its first regular season tilt next Saturday night, Nov. 3 when the Cadets host St. Michael's at 7 p.m. at Kreitzberg Arena.
