Box Score NORTHFIELD, Vt. – Senior forward Brittany Casey (Pointe-Claire, Quebec) of the Norwich University women's soccer team scored in the 23rd minute of Saturday's Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) match to notch her 59th career goal and tie the program all-time career goals record.
Casey's 11th tally of the season gave Norwich (5-8-3, 3-6-3 GNAC) the lead for the next 50 minutes until Johnson & Wales' Eryn Mahoney scored in the 78th minute to tie the game up at one. The two sides battled through two 10-minute overtime periods with neither team being able to score.
Casey scored her record-tying goal by re-directing a great service ball from freshman Ailish Pilotte (Old Orchard Beach, Maine). Casey lunged and stuck her foot out to just get enough of the ball and tip it into the left corner of the net while leaving Johnson & Wales goalkeeper Alexa Rose no chance.
Johnson & Wales (5-11-1, 4-6-1 GNAC) turned up the pressure in the second half looking for the equalizer, outshooting the Cadets 14-3. Mahoney finally got the Wildcats level when she sent a shot in from outside the 18-yard box that crossed up Norwich junior goalkeeper Allison Hull (South Royalton, Vt.), glancing off her hands and slipping into the corner of the net.
Hull made five saves for Norwich while Rose had four for JWU.
With the tie, Norwich was officially eliminated from the GNAC playoff race. The Cadets close out their 2012 campaign with a non-conference tilt at SUNY Plattsburgh on Wednesday at 4 p.m.
