Women's Soccer: Norwich falls 2-1 to Emerson in OT

Box Score

BOSTON – Despite a valiant effort playing with just 11 players and no subs for 95-plus minutes, the Norwich University women's soccer team fell 2-1 to Emerson in overtime on Saturday afternoon in Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) action.

After a scoreless first half, Emerson (7-3-3, 5-2-3 GNAC) struck first blood in the 67th minute when Riana Odin scored unassisted off a free kick that took two deflections before settling into the back of the NU net.

Norwich (5-7-2, 3-5-2 GNAC) leveled the score in the 75th minute when sophomore midfielder Alex Frank (Medford, N.J.) tallied her fourth goal of the season off an assist from freshman midfielder Sara Goes (East Providence, R.I.).

Neither side was able to score again through the rest of regulation but just over 5:30 into the first overtime session, Emerson's Tayllar Righini scored off a corner kick from Alyssa Giannone to lift the Lions to the victory with the eventual game-winning goal.

Norwich junior goalkeeper Liz Chapdelaine (Somerset, Mass.) made eight saves on 10 shots on goal for the Cadets. Emerson's Allie Altman turned aside 10 shots to pick up the victory for the Lions.

Emerson outshot Norwich 22-16, but the Cadets held a 4-1 advantage in the overtime session.

Norwich has two GNAC contests remaining against Simmons and Johnson & Wales. The Cadets still hold down eighth place in the league standings but JWU and St. Joseph's (Maine) both have games in hand on the Cadets.
