Football: Cadets Rally to Down Gallaudet 34-24

Box Score

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Norwich University's senior quarterback Kris Sabourin (Georgia, Vt.) threw for 284 yards and four touchdowns as the Cadets erased an early 17-0 deficit to get a 34-24 win on the road against Gallaudet University. The win brings the Cadets to 4-2 overall and 1-2 in Eastern Collegiate Football Conference (ECFC) action, while Gallaudet falls to 4-2 overall and  2-1 in conference play.

The Cadets found themselves trailing 7-0 just over a minute into the game when the run-oriented Bison surprised Norwich by starting the game with a passing attack. After Todd Bonheyo connected with Braxton Baker for 57 yards on the game's first play, Bonheyo found Ryne Worsham in the back of the endzone for the game's first score.

The Cadets were not able to move the ball in the first quarter against the Bison defense and early in the second quarter the Bison struck again as Tony Tatum returned a Drew Banuskevich (Peterborough, N.H.) punt 54 yards and put the Bison up 14-0. A Chase Magsig field goal gave the Cadets a 17-0 deficit just four minutes into the second stanza.

Sabourin responded by engineering a seven-play, 78-yard drive that ended with Zach Allen (Boston, Mass.) catching a 15-yard slant route in the middle of the end zone. Allen caught five passes for a team-high 101 yards on the day.

Sabourin wasn't done for the half, striking again with 28 seconds left. After an Ethan Hanks' (Hull, Mass.) interception gave Norwich the ball back, Sabourin rolled to his right and fired back across his body to Danny Triplett (Haverhill, Mass.), who took the ball in from 15-yards out. The Cadets missed the extra point and trailed 17-13 at half.

Sabourin continued to move the Cadets down the field after halftime as he led Norwich inside the red zone on their first possession, only to have the drive stall and turn the ball over on downs.

But Norwich's defense held and Sabourin found Adam Fraser (Lowell, Mass.) in the endzone with 3:13 left in the third quarter to give Norwich a 20-17 lead. The touchdown capped off a eight play, 82-yard drive.

The back-and-forth contest saw the Bison take a 24-20 lead on the last offensive play of the third quarter when Bonheyo found B.J. Flores from 41-yards out.

Sabourin again led the Cadets back into Bison territory with just under ten minutes to play in the game. On third-and-goal from the Bison six-yard-line, Sabourin's pass was dropped but on fourth down, Dan Jamieson (Morris Plains, N.J.) caught the fade from the Cadet signal caller to give Norwich a lead they would never relinquish.

Triplett finished the scoring for the Cadets with a 13-yard-run. He finished with 65 yards on the day.

The Cadet defense surrendered just 14 first downs and had two interceptions. Dominique Davis's (Kissimmee, Fla.) interception of Bonheyo in the final minute sealed the victory.

The Cadets return home to Sabine Field next week when they host Husson in ECFC action at 1:30 p.m.
