NORTHFIELD, VT. – No. 23 nationally ranked and No. 2 New
England Wrestling Association Springfield College needed four
bonus-point wins to hold off a gutsy charge from Norwich University
Jan. 18.
The Cadets, dipping to 0-6, picked up five wins against the
Pride (5-1). Freshman 125-pounder Alex Stewart (Ellicott City, Md.)
led off the match-up with a forfeit win. SC quickly came back with
a fall and two major decisions to lead 14-6. NU answered the
visiting team's comeback with a pair of decisions from
freshman 157-pounder Nick Smith (Hanover, Mass.) and freshman
165-pounder Cody Gladstone (Merimack, N.H.) to cut the lead to
14-12. The two sides traded two more decisions, as sophomore
184-pounder Sam Kent (Keene, N.H.) continued his recent hot streak
by winning his third match in the last four tries. Norwich trailed
just 17-15 with two matches remaining before the Pride locked up
the win with a major decision at 197 pounds. Sophomore heavyweight
Anthony Joyce (Lincoln, R.I.) continued to track towards 20 wins,
moving to 18-12 on the season behind a 4-0 victory.
Coach John Hartupee's squad resumes action by traveling to
Springfield College Sunday, Jan. 22, for the New England Duals.
