Box Score 2 PAXTON, Mass. - Jeff Lander broke Anna Maria College's all-time record for career home runs with a three-run blast in game one, while teammate Mike Guarnieri led all players with five hits and six RBI as the AMCATS swept Norwich University in a non-conference doubleheader at Quinsigamond Community College on Thursday. The AMCATS have now won four straight contests, as well as five of their last six, to improve to 13-9 on the season. The pair of losses drop the Cadets to 0-11 overall on the year as they prepare to start conference play this weekend.
Lander hit his historic home run in the third inning of game one, launching a three-run shot over the left center field fence to surpass Andy Mathieu as Anna Maria's all-time home run king.
Lander finished the day with four runs scored and four RBI while reaching base five times.
Guarnieri finished both contests a combined 5-for-8, adding four runs scored in addition to driving in six runs. Mike Galvin went 4-for-5 with a home run, three runs scored, and three runs driven in for Anna Maria during game two alone.
On the mound, Dean Diamantopoulos was dominant in game one for the AMCATS, going five shutout innings while allowing just one hit and striking out five batters to improve to a perfect 3-0 on the season. Mike Curley pitched the final two frames to close out the one-hitter for AMC.
Anna Maria's Justin Hyland improved to 2-0 in game two by spinning 4 1/3 innings of two-run ball, striking out four batters in the process, before Joe McNeil and Shawn Secondini combined to finish out the 16-2 victory.
The Cadets were led by sophomore OF Dustin Shimkus who had a team-high three hits and two RBI on on the day, including a solo home run in game two. Freshman INF Jordan Patton went 1-for-3 with a run scored in the nightcap, while freshman OF Kyle Gidari and junior INF Sean Kennedy each walked and scored a run in game one.
Shimkus cut the AMC lead to 4-1 in the second game with a deep home run to left center in the top of the fourth, however the AMCATS answered with five runs in the bottom half of the frame to effectively put the game out of reach.
Junior INF David Maxfield rounded out the Cadets' scoring for the afternoon when he knocked home a run with a fielder's choice in the sixth to cut the deficit to 12-2.
NU will be back in action this Saturday when the Cadets travel to Newton, Mass., for a doubleheader against Lasell College starting at 1 p.m. Since the games were originally scheduled to be played in Northfield, Norwich will serve as the designated home team and receive last at-bats after the venue change was caused by unplayable conditions at Garrity Field.
