Box Score 2 NORTHFIELD, Vt. – The Norwich softball team rebounded from a 12-2 loss in the opener of Saturday's Great Northeast Athletic Conference doubleheader to come back and pick up a huge 6-2 win over conference-leading Simmons in Game 2 on Saturday afternoon at the NU Softball Field.
The Cadets (6-16, 6-8 GNAC) played for the first time in 2011 on their home field and picked up their biggest win of the season to date with the help of freshman Kylie Pratt's arm and bat.
Pratt (3-2) pitched a complete game six-hitter to limit the high-octane Simmons' offense to just two runs after they came into Saturday's doubleheader hitting over .350 as a team.
Pratt also provided the biggest blow on offense with a three-run homerun in the bottom of the fifth that gave NU a 5-1 lead.
The Cadets wasted little time jumping on top in Game 2 as Abby Belcher and Erin Clark put together back-to-back singles to lead off the bottom of the first inning. They both came around to score on RBI singles from Marley Balasco and Noel Byers as the first four NU hitters reached base safely off Simmons' starting pitcher Sammi Letizio.
The Sharks cut the deficit back to 2-1 in the top of the fourth when Courtney Collier laced an RBI double to score Emily Cunningham.
But, Pratt's blast coupled with an additional run from Kim Comtois proved to be too much for the Sharks to come back from.
Simmons added a run in the top of the seventh when Amanda Gould plated Caitlin Pagel. But, that's as close as the Sharks would get as Gould was called out for runner's interference after Sami Hodgkins hit a ground ball to shortstop.
In Game 1, Simmons' senior shortstop Annie Thompson led a 13-hit effort for the Sharks with two doubles and three total hits as well as two RBIs. Christina Mulcahy and Sami Hodgkins each had two RBIs as well for the Sharks.
Belcher and Pratt eached picked up an RBI for the Cadets in Game 1.
Junior pitcher Kelsey Buker was saddled with the loss for Norwich after giving up seven earned runs in two innings.
Simmons' starter Courtney Collier picked up her ninth win of the season after giving up two runs while striking out four.
Norwich returns to action on Sunday when it hosts Emmanuel (10-19, 6-12 GNAC) in a GNAC doubleheader starting at 1 p.m.
