Box Score NORTHFIELD, Vt. – The Norwich women's ice hockey team stretched its unbeaten streak to nine straight games as the Cadets shutout Southern Maine 4-0 on Saturday afternoon at Kreitzberg Arena in ECAC East action.
Freshman defenseman Brittany Sharman had a goal and an assist to lead the Norwich offense, while junior defenseman Amanda Wilks chipped in with two assists.
Melissa Rundlett opened the scoring by putting home a rebound in front of the net on a power play to give Norwich a 1-0 lead at the 6:58 mark of the first period.
Julie Fortier pushed the lead to 2-0 when she banged home a shot from the middle of the slot while being pushed to the ice at the 13:43 mark of the first period. Amanda Wilks and Renee Lortie picked up assists on Fortier's 14th goal of the season.
Neither scored again until the 1:41 mark of the third period when Brittany Sharman ripped a hard low slap shot past Southern Maine goaltender Jordan Lee to give the Cadets a 3-0 lead. Meghan Papagno and Haley Gibson each recorded assists on Sharman's second goal of the season.
Brittane Michaud capped the scoring by tipping home a centering pass from Sophie Leclerc at the 17:04 mark of the third period.
Norwich senior goaltender Cindy Fortin turned aside all 17 shots she faced to pick up her second shutout of the season and 14th of her stellar career in the Maroon and Gold. Fortin has now won 11-straight starts and is 11-1-0 on the season.
Lee made 42 saves for Southern Maine to drop to 6-13-2 on the year.
Norwich outshot the Huskies 46-17 to clinch the season-series sweep after defeating Southern Maine 5-3 earlier this season.
The Cadets return to action on Monday night at 7:30 p.m. when they host Plymouth State at Kreitzberg Arena in a make-up game from last Wednesday.
