Box Score 2 NORTHFIELD, VT. – Fueled by a strong offensive attack, Norwich University picked up a pair of three-game sweeps inside Andrews Gymnasium Oct. 29.
Coach Amanda Cuiffo's team rolled past GNAC foe Anna Maria in three games in the opener 25-14, 25-12, 25-14 and came back for a 25-14, 25-16, 25-20 sweep of Regis College of Massachusetts in non-conference play. Norwich heads into the 2011 GNAC postseason tournament on a roll having won five straight and eight of its last 11.
The Cadets (16-9, 8-5 Great Northeast Athletic Conference) hammered 70 kills and finished the day with a sparkling .273 attack percentage. Senior middle hitter Ivana Batur (Zadar, Croatia), highlighting Senior Day 2011 festivities, led the charge with 21 kills , while fellow senior middle hitter April Byllaardt (Stormville, N.Y.) finished with 14 kills, six service aces and five blocks. Junior right side hitter Gabrielle Miller (Grove City, Ohio) contributed 10 kills, 40 assists and 23 digs.
NU, with the fifth seed in the GNAC tournament, opens play with a 7 p.m. match at Simmons College in Boston, Massachusetts Tuesday, Nov. 1. The Sharks held off the Cadets in five games earlier this year during a tri-match at Suffolk College.
NOTES: Byllaardt also got in on the Senior Day celebration. Her six service aces helped move her into the top spot on the program's all-time list with 212. … The Cadets are making their fifth successive trip to the GNAC tourney. They go into Tuesday's clash at Simmons looking for the program's first win in the event. Two of the previous four appearances have gone five games.
