PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. – Everything went perfect for the
Norwich men's ice hockey team in the first five minutes of
Tuesday's non-conference game against Plattsburgh at the
Stafford Ice Arena. The Cadets scored two power play goals and led
2-0 before Plattsburgh called a timeout and came storming back to
score seven of the next nine goals to down Norwich 7-4 and send the
Cadets to their second straight defeat and third out of the last
four.
Norwich (6-4-1, 4-0-1 ECAC East) wasted no time taking advantage
of a Mike Grace hooking penalty to take a 1-0 lead
as Chris Duszynski banged home a loose rebound
after Plattsburgh goalie Josh Leis had saved the
initial shot from the point from Scott Schroeder.
Dusznyski's goal came 29 seconds into the power play and at
the 4:15 mark of the period.
The Cadets kept the momentum rolling as Schroeder capitalized on
a five-minute hitting from behind major to Barry
Roytman by letting a wrist shot loose from the top of the
circle that beat Leis blocker side and give Norwich a 2-0 lead.
Plattsburgh (10-4-0, 4-4-0 SUNYAC) struck back with 11 seconds
left in the period when Eric Satim beat
Alex Dubois on an odd-man rush to cut the deficit
to 2-1 heading into the first intermission.
The Cardinals leveled the score at two after Matt
Bessing stole the puck off a Norwich defender's
stick behind the net and then found Daniel Cobb in
front, who one-timed the puck past Dubois at the 5:55 mark of the
period.
Vick Schlueter gave the Cardinals their first
lead just past midway through the period by banging home a loose
puck in the slot off assists from Ryan Craig and
Dylan Clarke.
Norwich answered back 3:47 later when Blake
Forkey scored his second goal of the season off a rebound
after Chad Anderson hit the post. Forkey slid the
puck past Leis far post before the Plattsburgh goaltender could
recover from Anderson's initial shot.
However, the tie wouldn't last long as Plattsburgh added
two more goals to take a 5-3 lead into the intermission.
Kyle Taylor poked a puck past Dubois after he
couldn't cover it in the crease and then Eric
Satim gave the Cardinals a two-goal lead when he was left
all alone in front of Dubois without a defender within 10 feet.
Satim waited for Dubois to commit and then slid the puck past the
sprawled out Norwich goaltender at the 18:09 mark of the
period.
Plattsburgh effectively put the game away 5:15 into the third
period when another defensive miscue allowed Nick
Jensen in all alone on Dubois and he proceeded to beat
Dubois, top shelf on the backhand to give the Cardinals a 6-3
lead.
Forkey added his second goal of the game with 49 seconds left to
cut the deficit to two. But, Clarke capped the scoring with his
first of the game and 10th of the season on an empty
net.
Dubois made 20 saves while surrendering six goals to drop top
6-4-1 on the season. Leis picked up ninth win of the season, while
stopping 27 shots in net for Plattsburgh.
Norwich will look to break out of its slump on Friday when the
Cadets host fourth-ranked Bowdoin at 7 p.m. on Friday at Kreitzberg
Arena.
