NORTHFIELD, Vt. – Jhonneris Mendez went
5-for-8 with seven RBIs to lead Suffolk University to a
doubleheader sweep of Norwich University in Great Northeast
Athletic Conference (GNAC) action Saturday afternoon at a
sun-drenched Garrity Field. The Rams took an 8-1 decision in
the opening game, before roaring to a 14-0 victory in the nightcap.
Bobby Barrett went 6-for-8 at the plate in the doubleheader to
help lead the Rams (9-8, 5-1) offensively.
Barrett got Suffolk off to a good start in the opening game,
crushing a solo home run to deep left field in the top of the first
inning. The Rams made it 2-0 in the second inning when they pushed
across an unearned run.
Norwich (2-15, 1-5 GNAC) got a run back in the bottom of the
third inning when Joe Sleeman singled and advanced to second on a
base hit by Dustin Shimkus. Sleeman then stole third and came
around to score on a Kase Cook double play ball.
Suffolk added single runs in the fourth and fifth innings before
erupting for four runs in the seventh. Mendez had the big blow in
the seventh inning as he blasted a three-run home run to deep
centerfield.
The eight runs were more than enough for Suffolk starter Alex
Torres (2-1), who allowed just one run on seven hits in a complete
game effort. He struck out six batters while only walking one.
Sleeman led Norwich's seven-hit attack in the first game,
producing a pair of base hits. David Maxfield added a double for
the Cadets.
David Wygonski (1-1) took the loss for the Cadets, yielding
eight runs on 12 hits over 6.1 innings of work. He has a nice
outing going until running into trouble in the seventh inning. Don
Dibastiani came on in relief and recorded the final two outs.
Suffolk did not waste any time jumping on top in the nightcap,
scoring four runs in the first inning off of Norwich starter Austin
Shaw (0-4). Mendez again came up with the big hit for the Rams,
ripping a three-run double to right-centerfield.
Suffolk added two more runs in the top of the third inning to
chase Shaw from the game. Barrett and Mendez connected with
back-to-back RBI triples to do the damage in the frame.
The Rams tacked on two runs in the fourth inning before blowing
the game wide open with a six-run fifth inning. Five of
Suffolk's runs in the fifth were unearned due to three
Norwich fielding errors in the frame.
Norwich managed just two base hits in the second game with
Sleeman and Rob Knox recording singles. Suffolk smacked 17 hits in
the nightcap, with nine of them going for extra bases.
Marc Doyle (2-1) picked up the victory for the Rams, allowing
just the two hits over 6.0 innings of work.
Brad Hudson, who came on in relief of Shaw, went 4.2 innings and
allowed just two earned runs. He posted two strikeouts and did not
walk a batter.
The Cadets will be back in action on Tuesday, April 6, when they
travel to Nashua, N.H., to battle Daniel Webster College in a
non-conference contest. First pitch of the nine-inning game is set
for 3:30 p.m.
