EAST PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The No. 3 seeded
Johnson & Wales University baseball team defeated No. 6 seed
Norwich University, 11-1 in the opening round of the 2010 Great
Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) Baseball Championship Tuesday
afternoon at Pierce Field.
Johnson & Wales (14-26) jumped out to an early lead as the
Wildcats plated four unearned runs in the bottom of the first to
take a 4-0 advantage. JWU parlayed four base hits and two Norwich
errors into the big inning.
The Wildcats then broke the game open in the bottom of the
second when they scored five more runs. Rich Fonseca capped the
rally with a two-run double, extending JWU's lead to 9-0
after two innings. The Wildcats tacked on a single run in the third
to assume a commanding 10-0 advantage after three innings.
Norwich (8-28) got on the board in the top of the fifth when an
RBI single by David Maxfield made the score 10-1. JWU capped the
scoring in the bottom of the sixth when Zach Boyes led off with a
single and scored on a sacrifice fly by Fonseca. JWU recorded three
outs in the top of the seventh, and the game was halted due to the
ten-run rule.
Boyes went 4-for-4 with three run batted in and three runs
scored for Johnson & Wales, while Nick Alosco went 1-for-2 with
three runs scored and an RBI. Matt Yaeger went 3-for-4 with a run
scored for JWU.
Maxfield led Norwich at the plate, going 2-for-2 with an RBI.
The Cadets were only able to muster four hits in the contest.
Jeff Jordan recorded the complete-game victory for Johnson &
Wales, allowing one run on four hits with 10 strikeouts. Conar
Mahon suffered the loss for Norwich, allowing nine runs on 10 hits
in two innings of work.
