PLYMOUTH, N.H. – Dustin Shimkus went
4-for-5 with two home runs and six RBIs, and Joe Sleeman went
4-for-5 with five RBIs and four runs scored to help the Norwich
University baseball team defeat Plymouth State University, 16-5, in
the second game of a non-league doubleheader Sunday afternoon. The
win helped the Cadets earn a split of the twinbill after the
Panthers secured a 10-1 win in the opener.
Norwich (8-27) jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning of
the nightcap on an RBI single by Sleeman and a sacrifice fly by
Dustin Fleming.
The Cadets plated five runs in the second inning as Sleeman
ripped a two-run single and Shimkus crushed a three-run homer.
Norwich led 8-3 before an eight-run fourth inning put the game
away. Shimkus produced an RBI single and a two-run home run in the
inning, while Sleeman blasted a two-run double.
The run support was more than enough for NU starter Ian Caird
(1-4), who allowed five runs on eight hits in 5.0 innings pitched
to earn this first win of the season.
The Cadets pounded out 16 base hits in the game with Kase Cook
going 3-for-5 and Rob Knox going 2-for-3.
Plymouth State (6-22) cruised to an easy victory in the opening
game as the Panthers held Norwich to just three hits. The Panthers
took a 5-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning and never looked
back.
Alexandro Cardoza (0-4) was touched for seven runs on 11 hits in
3.1 innings of work. Knox, Shimkus and Travis Dyke accounted for
NU's hits in the contest, with Knox and Dyke both ripping
doubles.
Norwich will return to action when the Cadets travel to
Providence, R.I., to face Johnson & Wales University in a GNAC
Tournament first round matchup.
