NEWTON, Mass. –Marley Balasco went
3-for-4 with three runs scored, and Mackenzie Pratt struck out 10
batters in a complete game effort as the Norwich University
softball team defeated Lasell College, 8-1, in the first round of
the Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) Tournament on
Wednesday afternoon.
Caitlin Wohlschlegel and Seana Ellsworth each drove in two runs
apiece to help the Cadets (13-22) get past the Lasers (19-20-1) and
advance to the second round of the GNAC Tournament.
The Cadets, who were swept by the Lasers in a doubleheader just
two days ago, jumped on top 2-0 in the top of the first inning on
an RBI groundout by Lindsay Carey and a run-scoring single by
Whitney Grennon.
Norwich added three more runs in the top of the third on an RBI
single by Jessalyn Sweeney and a two-run double by Wohlschlegel.
The Cadets tacked on two runs in the top of the fifth inning on a
two-run triple by Ellsworth, and NU made it 8-0 in the top of the
sixth when the Cadets plated an unearned run.
The run support was more than enough for Pratt, who was
masterful throughout. She scattered seven hits over 7.0 innings of
work, allowing just one run in the sixth inning. She fanned 10,
while not allowing a walk.
