NORTHFIELD, Vt. –The Norwich University
softball team saw its 10-game win streak snapped Sunday afternoon
as the Cadets dropped both ends of a Great Northeast Athletic
Conference (GNAC) doubleheader to Rivier College. The Raiders
escaped with a 5-3 win in the opener, before exploding for a 21-5
five-inning victory in the nightcap.
Whitney Grennon, who was NU's lone senior celebrating
Senior Day, went 1-for-3 with an RBI double in the first game.
Lindsay Carey had a solid game at the plate as well, going 3-for-3
with a double and a two-run home run.
Mackenzie Pratt kept Norwich (12-20, 9-13) in the game
throughout, allowing just five runs in a complete game effort. The
junior hurler struck out five and did not issue a walk.
Jessalyn Sweeney went 2-for-3 with a pair of doubles and one run
scored to help lead the NU attack in the nightcap. Marley Balasco
swung the bat well in the second game too, going 3-for-3 with a
double and two runs scored. Carey continued to hit the ball well in
the nightcap as well, going 3-for-3 with a double and two runs
batted in.
Kelsey Buker pitched four innings for the Cadets, while Hallie
Grennon came on to pitch the fifth inning.
The Raiders, who have won 25 straight games, improve to 26-1
(20-0 GNAC) following the sweep.
Norwich will be back in action on Monday, April 19, when the
Cadets wrap up their regular season by hosting GNAC rival Lasell
College for a doubleheader beginning at 3 p.m.
