NORTHFIELD, Vt. –The Norwich University
softball team extended its win streak to 10 straight games Saturday
afternoon as the Cadets swept a Great Northeast Athletic Conference
(GNAC) doubleheader from Johnson & Wales University. NU posted
a 9-3 victory in the first game, before taking a 12-0 five-inning
decision in the nightcap.
Lindsay Carey, Jessalyn Sweeney and Seana Ellsworth paced the
Cadets (12-18, 9-11 GNAC) offensively in the first game as each
player collected two hits apiece and combined for five RBIs.
Mackenzie Pratt lined a two-out two-run home run over the
left-center field fence to tie the game at 2-2 in the bottom of the
third, and the Cadets took the lead with two more runs in the
frame. NU never looked back en route to the victory.
Pratt picked up the win in the circle for Norwich in the opener,
pitching a complete game and allowing just three runs on six hits
and one walk. She posted five strikeouts in the victory.
Whitney Grennon led Norwich at the plate in the nightcap, going
3-for-3 with a pair of two-run home runs. She finished with four
RBIs and three runs scored. Sweeney went 2-for-3 with her first
career home run and four RBIs, while Marley Balasco posted two
hits, two runs and one RBI.
Kelsey Buker pitched five scoreless innings for the Cadets in
the circle. She helped her own cause at the plate, going 2-for-3
with a double and a run scored.
The Wildcats fall to 8-29 (7-15 GNAC) following the sweep.
Norwich will be back in action on Sunday, April 18, when the
Cadets host GNAC powerhouse Rivier College in a doubleheader
beginning at 1 p.m.
