NORTHFIELD, Vt. – The Norwich University
baseball team suffered two tough losses to Lyndon State College in
a non-conference doubleheader Tuesday afternoon at Garrity Field.
The Cadets dropped the first game, 7-6, before falling in the
nightcap, 13-4.
Ben Clark led the way for the Hornets (6-17) in the first game
going 2-for-4 with two RBIs. The senior shortstop ripped a double
and blasted a towering home run to deep right field.
David Maxfield went 3-for-3 with one RBI and two runs scored to
lead the Cadets (5-21) in the opener. Rob Knox smashed a double in
the first inning to extend his hitting streak to 13 games.
Norwich jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning on RBI
doubles by Dustin Shimkus and Knox. The Cadets pushed across an
unearned run in the second to make it 3-0, but Lyndon State tied it
up with one run in the third inning and two more in the fourth.
Maxfield put NU back on top when he lined an opposite field home
run over the fence in left field with two outs in the bottom of the
fourth.
Lyndon State tied the score at 4-4 in the top of the fifth when
Clark homered leading off the inning. The Hornets moved in front
7-4 with one run in the sixth and two more in the seventh, but the
Cadets rallied in the bottom of the seventh.
Knox found himself at the plate with two outs in the bottom of
the seventh inning and the Cadets trailing, 7-5. He managed to hit
a single to left that scored Travis Dyke, but Shimkus was cut down
at the plate trying to score from second to end the game.
Alex Cardoza (0-3) was charged with the loss after giving up
five runs over 5.1 innings. Cardoza struck out three while issuing
four walks on the day. Ben Kleiner pitched the remaining 1.2
innings for Norwich and the freshman righty gave up two runs on
three hits while picking up a strikeout.
Shayne Kirby went 3-for-4 with two runs scored to lead LSC in
the second game, while Clark added his second home run of the day
in the seventh inning when he drove a low pitch over the fence in
right center.
Dyke went 3-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored to pace the
Cadets offensively in the nightcap.
Norwich could not take advantage of a strong start by Brad
Hudson, who scattered two hits over four innings of shutout ball
before leaving with a 3-0 lead.
Ian Caird (0-4) took the loss for the Cadets when a key two-out
error kept the sixth inning alive after the Hornets had rallied to
tie the score at 4-4. Lyndon went on to score a total of 11
in the frame to take a commanding 12-4 lead.
LSC (6-19) tacked on one more run in the seventh when Clark
homered.
Knox pounded out a double in the third inning to run his hit
streak to 14 games.
Norwich will conclude its brief three-game homestand on
Wednesday, April 14, when the Cadets host in-state rival St.
Michael's College in a nine-inning game at Garrity Field.
First pitch for the non-league contest is slated for 3 p.m.
