NORTHFIELD, Vt. – The Norwich University
softball team extended its win streak to six straight games on
Saturday afternoon as the Cadets swept a Great Northeast Athletic
Conference (GNAC) doubleheader from Albertus Magnus College. The
Cadets took a 20-4 decision in the first game, before earning a
15-0 victory in the nightcap. Both games were completed in five
innings due to the eight-run rule.
Whitney Grennon went 3-for-4 with a double, home run and two
RBIs to help pace the Cadets in the first game. Lindsay Carey was
2-for-3 with a double, home run and three RBIs, while Marley
Balasco went 2-for-4 with a double and three RBIs. Sean Ellsworth
was 2-for-5 with a home run and five RBIs. Christine Clark put in a
solid day at the top of the Cadets batting order, going 3-for-4
with four runs scored.
Norwich (8-18, 7-11 GNAC) jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the opener
with a pair of runs in the first inning. The Cadets then broke the
game open with seven runs on seven hits in the second. Balasco
produced a two-run single and Carey ripped an RBI double to lead
the way in the frame.
Albertus Magnus (0-18, 0-14 GNAC) got one run back in the top of
the third inning on an RBI single by Jessica Neubig, but Norwich
put the game away with 11 runs in the bottom of the frame.
Ellsworth smashed a grand slam home run and Carey and Grennon
blasted back-to-back homers later in the frame to take a 20-1 lead
following the third inning.
The Falcons scored three times in the top of the third to round
out the scoring. Neubig ripped a two-run single to account for two
of the runs. Neubig went 2-for-3 with three RBIs to lead the way
for AMC.
Mackenzie Pratt struck out 10 batters over 4.0 innings to pick
up the victory in the circle for the Cadets. Kelsey Buker pitched a
perfect fifth inning with three strikeouts to close out the
contest.
Balasco (3-for-3, three RBIs, three runs scored) and Carey
(3-for-3, four RBIs, three runs scored) led the way offensively for
the Cadets in the nightcap.
Norwich again took a 2-0 lead after the first inning on the
strength of RBI doubles by Carey and Jessalyn Sweeney. The Cadets
then added five runs in the second on a three-run home run by
Balasco, an RBI groundout by Grennon and a solo home run off the
bat of Pratt.
NU plated two more runs in the third inning on Carey's
two-run single, and the Cadets put the game away with six runs in
the fourth. Ellsworth blasted her second grand slam of the day to
provide the big blow in the frame. Grennon and Carey both picked up
RBIs in the inning as well.
Hallie Grennon did not allow a hit in 5.0 innings of work to
pick up the complete game shutout in the circle for the Cadets. She
struck out eight and only walked one.
Norwich returns to action on Tuesday, April 13, when the Cadets
travel to Lyndonville, Vt., to take on in-state rival Lyndon State
College in a non-league doubleheader beginning at 3:30 p.m.
