BOSTON – The Norwich University softball
team saw its losing streak extended to 15 straight games on
Wednesday evening as the Cadets dropped both ends of their Great
Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) doubleheader to Emmanuel
College at Roberto Clemente Field. The Saints took the first game
10-2 in five innings, before rallying for a 10-5 triumph in the
nightcap.
Samantha Luther led the Emmanuel offense, going 6-for-8 on the
night with a double, a home run and two RBIs. Christina Proulx also
had a strong night at the plate for the Saints, going 5-for-6 with
five RBIs. Danielle Andruskiwec added three hits, including a pair
of doubles to help the Emmanuel (7-6, 3-3 GNAC) earn the sweep.
Lindsay Carey went 4-for-7 at the plate with two runs and one
RBI to pace the Norwich offense. The Cadets managed to scratch out
just nine hits in the doubleheader.
Emmanuel opened the first game with back-to-back doubles from
Luther and Proulx. Proulx's hit knocked in Luther and Elyse
Turgeon scored Proulx, as the Saints took a 2-0 lead in the first
inning. Emmanuel then posted a four-run third inning, which
featured consecutive singles from Proulx, Chelsey Guselli and
Turgeon. Erin McSheffrey smashed a three-run double, clearing the
bases, and extending the Saints' lead to 6-0.
Norwich (1-15, 0-8 GNAC) scored its first run of the night in
the top of the fourth when Carey singled and was moved around with
a double by Mackenzie Pratt. The Saints added on another run in the
bottom of the frame, when Guselli drilled a shot off the Norwich
second-baseman's glove, which scored Luther, who had reached
on her second hit of the night. Emmanuel held a 7-1 lead after four
innings.
In the top of the fifth, Norwich's Marley Balasco ripped a
two-out double and scored on Carey's third single of the
night. The Cadets trailed 7-2 before a three-run side by the Saints
ended the contest early.
Kelly Lloid went the distance in the circle for the Saints,
striking out eight of the 22 batters that she faced. Pratt
took the loss for the Cadets, yielding 10 runs on 10 hits over 4.2
innings.
Game two featured a solid comeback by Emmanuel in the fifth and
sixth innings, as the trailing Saints rattled off seven unanswered
runs to come away with a 10-5 win. The Saints jumped out to a 2-0
lead after scoring two runs in the first inning. Luther led off
with a single, stole third, and was driven in by Proulx. Turgeon
then reached on an error, before Andruskiwec singled up the middle
and moved her to third. Turgeon snuck home on an error by the
third-baseman.
The Cadets battled back in the top of the second and
manufactured two runs after a myriad of Emmanuel defensive errors,
capped with a base hit by Brittany Ramsay. A scoreless third inning
made way for action-packed fourth, fifth and sixth innings.
More defensive errors by the Saints put base-runners on for
Norwich, and Caitlin Wohlschlegel eventually scored to give the
Cadets a 3-2 edge. The Saints managed to tie things up again in the
bottom of the inning, but the Cadets moved on top 5-3 with two runs
in the top of the fifth inning. The Saints then went on a tear,
which featured a three-run fifth and a four-run sixth, to surge
ahead of the Cadets.
Luther led off the fifth with an inside-the-park home run,
launching one deep to centerfield. This was the first home run to
be hit at the new Clemente Field. Turgeon reached on an error by
the left-fielder and Andruskiwec drove her home with her second
double of the game, tying the contest at 5-all. McSheffrey then
doubled to left and scored Andruskiwec for the go-ahead run.
Emmanuel's defense held Norwich scoreless in the sixth and
the Saints tacked on four more runs in the bottom of the frame.
Kathryn Copp pitched the complete game for the Saints. Copp
faced 33 batters, struck out five, and gave up just two earned
runs. Norwich's Kelsey Buker was tagged with the loss for the
Cadets, throwing 5.0 innings, before getting relief from Hallie
Grennon.
Norwich returns to action on Friday, April 2, when the Cadets
travel to Standish, Maine, for a GNAC doubleheader opposite St.
Joseph's College (Maine).
