NEWTON, Mass. – The Norwich University
baseball team opened its Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC)
schedule on Saturday afternoon by dropping both ends of a
doubleheader to Lasell College. The Lasers cruised to a 15-4
victory in the opening game, before rallying for an 8-5 win in the
nightcap.
Lasell (2-6, 2-0 GNAC) plated four runs in the bottom of the
first inning and added seven more in the second to quickly assume
control of the opener.
Ian Caird allowed 11 runs on seven hits and five walks in 1.1
innings of work to pick up the loss on the mound for the Cadets.
Travis Dyke registered a two-run single and Kase Cook ripped a
two-run double to account for Norwich's four runs. The Cadets
mustered just five hits in the contest.
Norwich (1-11, 0-2 GNAC) jumped out to a 4-0 lead through two
innings in the nightcap. Dustin Shimkus laced an RBI single in the
first inning, and the Cadets added three more runs on one hit in
the second inning. Shimkus produced another run-scoring single in
the second as NU looked to be in control.
Lasell tied the score with four runs in the third inning, and
the Lasers surged in front with three more runs in the fourth
inning. Lasell made it 8-4 with a single run in the sixth inning,
but Norwich added a run in the seventh to account for the final
margin.
Shimkus went 2-for-3 with two runs batted in. He accounted for
Norwich's only two hits in the contest.
Ryan Kelly yielded seven runs on six hits and four walks over
3.1 innings of work to take the loss for the Cadets.
The Cadets continue their GNAC slate on Sunday, March 28, when
they face Johnson & Wales University in a doubleheader
beginning at 1 p.m.
