PAXTON, Mass. – The Anna Maria College
baseball team swept a non-league doubleheader from Norwich
University on Thursday afternoon at Alumni Field. The AMCATS won
the opening game 15-2, before taking a 16-2 decision in six innings
in the nightcap.
Jeff Scafidi went 3-for-3 with four RBIs to lead Anna Maria
(7-5) in the opener. The AMCATS led 2-1 before an eight-run third
inning blew the game open. Jeff Kodys blasted a three-run home run
to highlight the uprising, which gave Anna Maria a commanding 10-1
advantage.
Brendon Tivnan (2-0) scattered six hits over 5.0 innings to pick
up the victory on the mound for the AMCATS.
David Maxfield led Norwich at the plate, going 2-for-3 with a
double and a triple. He also drove in one of Norwich's two
runs. Dustin Shimkus was 1-for-2 with a double and an RBI for the
Cadets as well.
Alexandro Cardoza (0-2) was saddled with the loss for the
Cadets, allowing 10 runs on 11 hits over 2.1 innings.
Anna Maria jumped all over Norwich in the nightcap, scoring
three runs in the first inning and adding five more in the second.
The AMCATS led 11-2 after three innings and they plated five runs
in the fifth to cap the scoring.
James McNamara went 3-for-4 at the plate with six RBIs and two
runs scored to pace the Anna Maria attack. Scafidi, meanwhile, was
3-for-3 with four RBIs and three runs scored. McNamara ripped a
three-run homer in the first inning to get the AMCATS going
offensively. He added a two-run double in the second inning.
Tim Henderson (1-0) gave up two runs on three hits over 4.0
innings to earn the victory for Anna Maria.
Norwich (1-9) managed just four hits in the nightcap. Shimkus
and Kase Cook each belted doubles to pace the Cadets at the plate.
Seth Knihtila (0-1) took the loss after being touched up for
eight runs on five hits and five walks over 1.1 innings.
The Cadets return to action this weekend (March 27-28), when
they open their Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) schedule
with road doubleheaders at Lasell and Johnson & Wales.
