Men's Ice Hockey: NCAA Frozen Four Field Set; Norwich To Face Plattsburgh State On Friday

LAKE PLACID, N.Y. - Only four teams are left in the hunt for the NCAA Division III men's ice hockey national championship crown. Norwich University, Plattsburgh State, St. Norbert and Oswego State are each heading to Lake Placid, N.Y., to play for the national championship Friday and Saturday (March 19-20).

Both Norwich (24-1-4) and Plattsburgh State (19-5-4) needed overtime to punch their tickets to Lake Placid. The Cadets, who are making their second trip to the Frozen Four in three seasons, used Pier-Oliver Contnoir's overtime goal to lift them to a 2-1 win over Elmira College (18-9-1) in their quarterfinal match-up last night. Elmira scored at the 7:21 mark of the first period and held the lead until the final minute of the game, when Steven Schroeder tallied the game tying goal for the Cadets.

Top-ranked Norwich will face off against fifth-ranked Plattsburgh State in one semifinal game on Friday. The Cardinals (19-5-4) needed Jared Docking's overtime goal to lift them to a 3-2 win over Middlebury (19-5-4). Plattsburgh held a 2-0 lead in the second period, but the Panthers rallied and scored once in the second period and forced overtime with a third period goal.

Friday's other semifinal contest will feature St. Norbert (23-3-3) and Oswego State (26-2-0). St. Norbert survived a 3-1 win over Gustavus Adolphus (20-7-2) in their quarterfinal game, Friday night. The third-ranked Green Knights held a 2-1 win until scoring an empty-netter with just a minute to play in the third period.

Meanwhile, second-ranked Oswego State scored five second period goals and blew past Bowdoin (19-7-2), 9-2. Neil Musselwhite scored four goals in the Lakers' win, while teammate Hank Van Boxmeer netted a pair of goals and two assists.

Hosted by both Plattsburgh State University and the Olympic Regional Development Authority (ORDA), semifinal action on the Olympic Center's Herb Brooks Arena begins at 4 and 7:30 p.m., and Saturday's title game's face-off is slated for 5 p.m. Saturday's championship match-up will also be televised live on CBS College Sports Network.
