Women's Basketball: Rivier Upsets Norwich, 62-54

NORTHFIELD, Vt. - Mackenzie Brooks pumped in a game-high 17 points and pulled down 11 rebounds, and Steph Adams added 14 points and 12 boards as Rivier College upended Norwich University, 62-54, in a Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) women's basketball game Tuesday evening at Andrews Hall. 

Jess Mellen chipped in six points, a team-high 13 rebounds and a game-high six assists for the Raiders, who outscored the Cadets 34-25.

Senior G Ally Daniels scored 16 points and snared 11 rebounds to pace Norwich, while senior F Jess Jaggars added 13 points and a team-high 13 rebounds. Junior F Christine Daniels posted 12 points for the Cadets, who shot just 27.4 percent (20-of-73) from the field for the game.

Rivier (15-7, 6-3 GNAC) trailed 53-52 at the 2:53 mark following a three-pointer by Ally Daniels, but the Raiders ended the game on a 10-1 run to secure the eight-point victory. Monica White buried a pair of three-pointers and connected on a free throw during the game-closing spurt.

A pair of lay-ups by Christine Daniels helped Norwich (15-6, 7-2 GNAC) jump out to an 8-2 lead less than four minutes into the contest. Rivier responded with an 8-2 spurt over the next five minutes to tie the score at 10-all at the 11:42 mark. The game was tied at 21-21 with 4:09 to play before halftime, but four points by Adams helped the Raiders go on a 7-0 run and take a 28-21 advantage two minutes later. Triples by Ally Daniels and senior G Erica Rate helped fuel an 8-0 spurt by Norwich to end the half and take a 29-28 edge into the intermission. Rate's three-pointer, which just beat the first half buzzer, moved the Norwich crowd to its feet.

The Cadets led at halftime despite shooting just 29.7 percent (11-of-37) from the field. Rivier, meanwhile, shot 40.7 percent (11-of-27) from the floor. NU converted 16 Rivier turnovers into 13 points. Ally Daniels led Norwich in the first half with nine points. Adams led all scorers with 10 at the intermission.

The game, which featured 10 ties and 10 lead changes, continued to see-saw back and forth in the second half. Rivier led by four points on two occasions, while Norwich led by as many as five points. The Cadets held a 50-45 advantage with 8:03 remaining in the stanza, but Rivier reeled off seven unanswered points to move in front 52-50 five minutes later. Ally Daniels then nailed a three-pointer to give Norwich its final lead of the game. The Cadets were held without a field goal over the final 2:53.

Norwich scored 19 points off of 28 Rivier turnovers to keep the game close, despite the dismal shooting performance.

Rivier made 42.3 percent (22-of-52) of its shots in the game. The Raiders held a 51-37 rebounding edge.

Norwich will resume its GNAC schedule on Saturday, Feb. 9, when the Cadets travel to Providence, R.I., to take on Johnson & Wales University. Tip-off for the conference clash is slated for 1 p.m.
