KINGSTON, R.I. - Five different Cadets scored
goals, and junior G Cindy Fortin stopped 16 of the 17 shots that
she faced as the Norwich University women's ice hockey team picked
up a 5-1 victory over Salve Regina in an ECAC East contest Friday
afternoon.
Norwich (13-3-3, 11-2-2 ECAC East) opened the scoring at 7:13 of
the first period when senior F Sophie Leclerc scored an unassisted
goal. The Cadets made it 2-0 late in the first period when
sophomore F Julie Fortier scored her team-leading 16th marker of
the season off a feed from junior F Kelsey Cone at the 15:30 mark.
Norwich extended its lead to 3-0 midway through the second
period when sophomore D Sarianne Lynn scored off assists from
sophomore F Melissa Rundlett and junior F Emily Goff at the 9:35
mark.
Salve Regina (12-5-3, 9-3-3 ECAC East) got on the scoreboard
just seven seconds later when Rachel Porter scored an unassisted
goal at the 9:42 mark.
The Cadets added a pair of insurance goals midway through the
third period to close the scoring. Freshman F Courtney Parisot made
it 4-0 at the 8:41 mark off assists from sophomore D Amanda Wilks
and Leclerc. Wilks then capped the scoring at the 10:04 mark when
she scored a power play goal off feeds from Fortier and senior D
Shannon Silver.
Norwich held a commanding 51-17 edge in shots on goal in the
game. The Cadets cashed in their only power play opportunity of the
game, while the Seahawks were unsuccessful on all three of their
attempts.
Norwich will return home to the friendly confines of Kreitzberg
Arena on Sunday, Feb. 7, to battle Manhattanville College in a
pivotal ECAC East contest. The opening faceoff for the conference
clash is set for 3 p.m.
