NORTHFIELD, Vt. - Javon Williams scored a
team-high 22 points and grabbed a game-high nine rebounds, and
Dominik Orlow added 18 points and six boards to help Lasell College
beat Norwich University, 82-73, in a Great Northeast Athletic
Conference (GNAC) men's basketball game Thursday evening at Andrews
Hall.
The Lasers (8-12, 6-7 GNAC) shot a blistering 55.6 percent
(15-of-27) from the field in the second half to pull away from the
Cadets. Aaron Bray added 12 points for Lasell, while Justin Harris
posted 11 points, four assists and three steals.
Norwich (11-9, 6-7 GNAC) was led by junior G Cori Boston, who
scored a game-high 29 points and pulled down eight rebounds. Boston
scored 18 of his 29 points in the second half as he kept the Cadets
in the game throughout. Junior G/F Jaren Jeffcoat added 16 points,
while sophomore F Antonio Davis chipped in 10 points and seven
caroms. Senior F Israel Guardado pitched in eight points and eight
rebounds, while sophomore G Darell Marshall dished out a game-high
five assists.
Orlow made arguably the biggest shot of the game with 45 seconds
to play when he buried a three-pointer out of the left corner to
extend Lasell's lead to 77-71. Norwich got no closer than four
points the rest of the way as the Lasers made 5-of-6 free throws in
the final 27 seconds to seal the win.
Norwich made three of its first four field goal attempts of the
contest to jump on top 9-2 less than three minutes into the game.
Boston scored seven points during the game-opening spurt, including
a three-pointer. Lasell responded with a 21-5 run over the next
seven minutes to take a 23-14 advantage at the 10:16 mark. A triple
by Jeffcoat ignited a quick 7-0 spurt by the Cadets, which trimmed
the Lasers' lead to 23-21 with 8:21 to play before halftime.
Norwich eventually got to within one point (26-25), but Lasell
stretched its lead to seven points (38-31) at the intermission.
Williams led all scorers in the opening 20 minutes with 13
points. Boston paced the Cadets with 11 points in the first half.
Norwich opened the second half on a 12-5 run to tie the score at
43-all at the 15:50 mark. Lasell bounced back with a 9-2 spurt to
reclaim a seven point advantage (52-45) three minutes later. A
three-pointer by Jeffcoat sparked a quick 6-0 spurt by Norwich,
which brought the Cadets to within one point (52-51) at the 10:30
mark. NU still trailed by one point (61-60) with 5:32 remaining,
but six straight points by Lasell put the Lasers on top, 67-60, at
the 3:59 mark. A free throw by junior G/F Quincy Williams and
another triple by Jeffcoat made it 67-64 with 3:15 showing on the
clock, but Norwich got no closer the rest of the way.
Norwich shot 41.5 percent (27-of-65) from the floor for the
game, while Lasell made 47.7 percent (31-of-65) of its shots from
the field. The Lasers held a 10-0 advantage in fast-break points.
Norwich will take to the road on Saturday, Feb. 6, when the
Cadets travel to Standish, Maine, to battle GNAC rival St. Joseph's
(Maine) at 3 p.m. NU scored a 72-71 victory over the Monks when
they met last month in Northfield.
