NORTHFIELD, Vt. - Senior G Ally Daniels scored
a career-high 28 points, and senior F Jess Jaggars registered a
double-double with a career-high 20 points and a career-best 20
rebounds as the Norwich University women's basketball team breezed
past Johnson & Wales University, 80-62, in a Great Northeast
Athletic Conference (GNAC) Tournament quarterfinal game Tuesday
evening at Andrews Hall.
Daniels scored 18 of her 28 points after halftime as the Cadets
steadily pulled away from the Wildcats. Sophomore F Tara Stevenson
added 12 points off the bench for Norwich, hitting all five of her
field goal attempts. The Cadets shot a red-hot 50.9 percent from
the field in the contest to overcome 24 turnovers.
Norwich advances to the GNAC Tournament semifinals, where the
second-seeded Cadets will host third-seeded Albertus Magnus College
on Thursday evening. Gametime for the semifinal showdown is set for
7 p.m., at Andrews Hall.
Norwich (19-6) made six of its first seven shots from the field
to jump on top 19-5 less than five minutes into the contest.
Johnson & Wales responded with a 14-3 run over the next seven
minutes to trim the Cadets' lead to 22-19 with 8:22 to play before
halftime. NU led 24-21 before reeling off six unanswered points to
push its advantage to 30-21 at the 4:22 mark. JWU got to within
four points with 2:37 left in the half, but Norwich finished the
stanza on a 6-2 spurt to carry a 36-28 lead into the intermission.
Jaggars led Norwich in the first half with 12 points and 13
rebounds. Daniels added 10 points in the opening stanza, connecting
on 5-of-7 field goal attempts.
Jeniphr Moxley paced the Wildcats in the opening 20 minutes with
seven points. JWU hit just 25.0 percent (9-of-36) of its shots from
the floor in the half, while NU made 47.8 percent (11-of-23) of its
field goals.
Norwich began the second half on an 11-2 run to open up a 47-30
advantage at the 14:50 mark of the second half. Johnson & Wales
got no closer than 10 points the rest of the way, and the Cadets
were never truly threatened en route to the victory.
Alexia Ramirez led Johnson & Wales (11-14) with a team-high
17 points. Allyson Dowen added 14 points for the Wildcats, while
Morgan Wilson chipped in 10. Moxley finished with nine points for
JWU.
NU held a 49-23 rebounding edge, which led to a 16-4 advantage
in second-chance points. Johnson & Wales shot just 34.4 percent
(22-of-64) from the field for the game.
