NEW LONDON, Conn. - Freshman F Kyle Thomas
scored twice, and four other Cadets tallied goals as the No.
2-ranked Norwich University men's ice hockey team skated past
Connecticut College, 6-1, in an ECAC East-NESCAC Interlock game
Friday evening at Dayton Arena.
Norwich (19-1-4, 15-1-2 ECAC East) broke on top 1-0 just 48
seconds into the first period when Thomas netted his first goal of
the game off assists from freshman F Tory Allen and senior D Eric
Tallent.
The Cadets held a 21-3 edge in shots during the first period,
but they were unable to get anything else past Connecticut College
goaltender Greg Parker. Norwich enjoyed a five-minute power play
during the stanza, but the Cadets settled for a one-goal lead at
the first intermission.
Allen made it 2-0 in favor of the Cadets at 7:02 of the second
period when he potted his sixth marker of the season off of feeds
from freshman F Scott Schroeder and sophomore D Owen Carpino.
Norwich outshot Connecticut College 17-4 in the second period,
but the Cadets led just 2-0 after 40 minutes of action.
Connecticut College (7-15-1, 6-11-1 NESCAC) got on the
scoreboard less than three minutes into the third period when Joe
Capuano scored his team-leading eighth goal of the season at the
2:34 mark off an assist from Ryan Howarth.
Norwich reestablished its two-goal lead less than two minutes
later when Thomas registered his second tally of the night - and
team-leading 18th of the season - off assists from junior F Chad
Anderson and Tallent at the 4:14 mark. The Cadets extended their
advantage to 4-1 at 5:33 of the third when freshman F Steven
Schroeder scored his seventh goal of the campaign off a pass from
sophomore D Shawn Baker.
Norwich added two more goals in the final three minutes to
account for the final margin. Junior D Greg Eskedjian made it 5-1
at the 17:22 mark when he scored his fifth goal of the year off of
passes from senior F D.J. Fimiani and senior F Craig Serino.
Anderson then capped the scoring with 53 seconds to play in the
third period when he scored a power play goal. The marker, which
was Anderson's 11th of the season, was assisted by Eskedjian.
Norwich outshot Connecticut College 21-5 in the third period,
and the Cadets held a 59-12 edge in shots for the game.
Norwich senior G Ryan Klingensmith made 11 saves on the night to
pick up the victory for the Cadets. Parker finished with 53 stops
in the loss for the Camels.
Norwich will close out its 2009-10 regular season on Saturday,
Feb. 20, when the Cadets face NESCAC foe Tufts at 3 p.m. A
