BOSTON - Freshman G Ryan Williams connected on
5-of-9 three-pointers and finished with a game-high 23 points to
help lead the Norwich University men's basketball team to a 79-67
victory over Emmanuel College in a Great Northeast Athletic
Conference (GNAC) contest Wednesday evening at the Jean Yawkey
Center.
Junior G Cori Boston added 14 points and nine rebounds for the
Cadets, while junior G/F Quincy Williams scored 13. With the
victory, Norwich (13-11, 8-9 GNAC) moves into a three-way tie with
Johnson & Wales University and Lasell College for fifth place
in the GNAC standings with just one regular season game remaining
for each team.
The first six minutes of the contest went back and forth with
the score tied at 10-all at the 13:57 mark. A triple by Ryan
Williams ignited a 21-11 run over the next 10 minutes, which gave
Norwich a 31-21 lead with 3:10 to play before halftime. Norwich
tacked on a couple of more hoops before the break to take a 33-22
lead into the intermission.
Norwich held its double-figure lead through the first 10 minutes
of the second frame. A 9-0 Emmanuel run helped the Saints cut their
deficit to as five points (49-44) with 9:52 to play, but
consecutive jumpers by Boston and Ryan Williams gave NU a
nine-point cushion one minute later. The Saints got no closer than
six points the rest of the way s the Cadets held on for the
victory.
Armani Gil paced Emmanuel (4-20, 3-14 GNAC) with 15 points.
Andre Fuller added 12 points, while Isaiah Duke posted a
double-double with 11 points and a game-high 11 rebounds.
Norwich held a commanding edge at the free throw line,
converting 27-of-33 compared to just 13-of-22 for Emmanuel. The
Saints made 35.2 percent (25-of-71) of their field goals, while the
Cadets hit 40.0 percent (22-of-55) of their shots from the floor.
Norwich was outrebounded 45-39, but the Cadets still enjoyed a
22-10 edge in second-chance points.
Norwich will close out its 2009-10 regular season schedule on
Saturday, Feb. 20, when the Cadets host Emerson College on Senior
Day at Andrews Hall. Norwich will be looking to even the season
series versus the Lions after dropping a 76-62 decision in Boston
last month. Tip off for the conference clash is slated for 1 p.m.
Norwich's two seniors - Kevin Bishop and Israel Guardado - will be
honored prior to the start of the game.
