PROVIDENCE, R.I. - Lamonte Thomas scored a
game-high 33 points and added 12 rebounds to lead the Johnson &
Wales University men's basketball team to a 64-57 victory over
Norwich University in a Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC)
contest at the Harborside Recreation Center on Saturday afternoon.
Louis Ferreras added eight points, five rebounds and three
assists while senior Paul Nicholson narrowly missed a double-double
with nine points and nine boards in the win for the Wildcats
(11-12, 8-8 GNAC).
Norwich (12-11, 7-9 GNAC) was led by senior F Israel Guardado,
who scored 18 points and added nine rebounds off the bench.
Sophomore F Antonio Davis tallied 10 points and added eight
rebounds while junior G/F Jaren Jeffcoat had 10 points and three
boards in the setback for the Cadets.
Johnson & Wales outscored Norwich 13-2 over the first five
minutes of the game. The Cadets responded with a 19-7 run to take a
21-20 lead with 6:41 on the clock. The two squads then traded leads
for the remainder of the first half with JWU taking the 29-27
advantage heading into the locker room at the intermission.
The Wildcats pushed their lead to seven points early in the
second stanza when a jumper by Matt Williams made the score 38-31
with 12:37 left. The Cadets once again climbed to within three
points when a lay-up by Guardado cut the lead to 52-49 with 2:52
remaining. That was as close as Norwich would get, however, as JWU
hit seven free throws in the final two minutes of play to take the
64-57 victory.
Norwich will be back in action on Tuesday, Feb. 16, when the
Cadets travel to Boston, Mass., to take on GNAC foe Emmanuel
College at 7 p.m. battle Norwich defeated Emmanuel, 85-74, when the
teams met earlier this season in Northfield, Vt.
